match report
It was the “hot” Bombers that came out to play against St. Kilda tonight at The Dome. Essendon came out firing from the opening bounce and it was James Hird who led the Bombers’ charge. The skipper was outstanding and finished with 29 possessions. Matthew Lloyd was also unstoppable and starred in front of goal. The spearhead booted eight goals and was instrumental in Essendon destroying St. Kilda by 68-points.
The first quarter was action packed from the opening bounce. Essendon came out pumped up and ready for battle. They went inside 50m five times in as many minutes. The only problem was the scoreboard didn’t reflect Essendon’s dominance of the game. The team had four early misses before Mark Johnson in his 100th game finally broke through with the Bombers’ first goal at the five and a half minute mark. Essendon’s attack on the ball and early dominance was rewarded almost immediately when David Hille booted a long goal on the run.
After being criticised last week by Kevin Sheedy, Dean Solomon was in devastating touch. His was busy contesting everything and was damaging with his accurate foot skills – he finished with nine disposals for the term. The skipper James Hird started in attack and was busy creating play. He was in the thick of the action and notched up eight possessions. The Saints couldn’t get near the football in the first half of the quarter but despite Essendon’s dominance they were only 11-points ahead.
Joe Misiti was taken from the ground late in the quarter with a foot sprain and this slowed down Essendon’s momentum. St.Kilda clawed its way back into contention late in the quarter when it scored two goals. For all of Essendon’s hard work they went into quarter time with only a 10-point advantage.
The second quarter started where the first finished up. The match continued at a ferocious pace and intensity. The play was evenly shared but Essendon dominated the scoreboard. St.Kilda only managed one goal for the term compared to Essendon’s four. Lloyd booted two sensational goals and Damian Cupido also contributed one major. Ted Richards proved it was a good move by the coaching panel to bring him on mid-way through the term when in the space of five minutes he tapped the ball to Lloyd which resulted in a goal and then soon after booted his first for the match. Richards’ goal put Essendon 28-points in the lead of the Saints.
St.Kilda threw everything they had at Essendon in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough. The Saints came within 21-points midway through the quarter and looked in danger of decreasing the margin further until Essendon put its foot on the accelerator. The Bombers turned on three late quarter goals to push the three quarter time margin out to 38-points. Lloyd continued to star in front of goal and kicked three for the term.
The last quarter turned into a demolition job. Essendon kept St.Kilda to just one goal and piled on five majors for the term. The final margin could have been a lot worse than 68-points if Essendon had been accurate in front of goal. They kicked six behinds for the term. Lloyd capped off his brilliant performance with another two goals to bring his total to eight for the match. Scott Lucas (150 games) and Mark Johnson (100) were chaired off the ground by their teammates in recognition of their milestone games.
Essendon face Adelaide next Friday night at AAMI Stadium. The side will take confidence and form into the match after winning their last two matches.
