match report
Essendon didn’t do its finals aspirations any favours this evening at AAMI Stadium. Adelaide destroyed the Bombers from the opening bounce with its ferocious attack on the ball and run through the mid-field. The visitors had no answers for the in form Crows who demolished them by 41 points. Essendon’s undisciplined play proved costly throughout the course of the match. They conceded 31 free kicks for the game.
Essendon’s campaign to win its eighth match for the season was tarnished from the beginning when Jason Johnson (back) and Jobe Watson (groin) were late withdrawals. Adelaide mastered the slippery conditions and destroyed Essendon with their run through the middle in the opening quarter. Andrew McLeod and Mark Riccuito were the prime culprits and notched up 19 possessions between them. Essendon struggled to hit targets and their poor disposal resulted in a number of costly turnovers. Matthew Lloyd booted the team’s solitary goal for the term. Adelaide capitalised on their forward opportunities and kicked four the quarter and headed into the first break with a handy eight point advantage.
Essendon got the start they were after when Ted Richards booted the opening goal to peg the margin back to 12-points. However, that is where the Bombers influence on the game stopped. They spent the remainder of the quarter chasing tails. Adelaide was first to the ball, ran in numbers and did all the attacking. The Bombers fell down across half-back and similar to the first quarter let themselves down with poor foot skills and failure to hit targets. Scott Welsh was on fire for the Crows up forward and destroyed the Essendon defence. The coaching panel tried Danny Jacobs, Dustin Fletcher and Sean Wellman in an attempt to shut him down. They were unsuccessful and Welsh was damaging finishing with four goals for the half. Essendon are lucky to only trail by 33-points at the major break.
The man of the moment Welsh kicked the opening goal for the Crows and appeared to put the final result beyond doubt. Adelaide kept running hard and Essendon struggled to match their speed and ability to find the football. They added another two goals and appeared to have the game won. Wayne Carey slide awkwardly into the left goal post midway through the quarter and was taken from the ground with a badly gashed knee. Play stopped for just over three minutes and the momentum seemed to swing in the Bombers favour when play resumed. They did most of the attacking for the remainder of the term and piled on four goals. Ted Richards was a focal point in the forward line and booted two goals for the quarter. The Bombers endeavour late in the term gave them a glimmer of hope at three quarter time when they trailed by 28-points.
Riccuito undid all the Bombers hardwork when he booted Adelaide’s 11th goal and pushed the margin out to 34-points in the opening minutes. Hird kicked Essendon’s only goal for the term at the 10 minutes mark of the quarter. It was too little too late and the Crows continued to work hard and attack to the final siren. They added another two majors to bring the final margin to 41 points. In another sour note for Essendon Dustin Fletcher was reported for allegedly striking in the dying seconds of the match.
Essendon’s poor record on the road continued tonight – it is the fourth interstate defeat this season. The Bombers never looked capable of winning and the final score hid Adelaide’s domination. Adelaide controlled the play and its run through the midfield destroyed the Bombers. Essendon has another tough match next week when they face Brisbane at The Dome on Saturday night. It needs to win that game to stay in the race for the finals.
