match report
What a fitting ending to a record-breaking day for Matthew Lloyd when he kicked his 11th goal on the final siren to help Essendon record one of its best wins for the season. Lloyd confirmed his status as one of the best full-forwards in the competition when he became the Bomber’s all time greatest goal-kicker, breaking Simon Madden’s 575 goal kicking record in the third quarter. It was a memorable day for the Bomber spearhead – he booted a career best six goals in the one quarter, kicked over 10 goals for the third time in his career and was the catalyst to the 67-point trouncing of the Western Bulldogs.
The first quarter was a delight to watch for all Essendon supporters. Lloyd dominated the scoreboard – he booted a career best six for the term and edged closer to breaking the Bombers’ goal kicking record. He was unstoppable in the air and on the lead – marking everything that came in his direction. From the opening bounce the 18 players wearing the black and red guernsey played an inspired brand of football. Adam McPhee scored the team’s first goal within minutes and then they added a further eight majors for the quarter to head into the first change with a 45-point advantage.
The Bulldogs fought back in the first half of the term and added three quick goals. Despite getting a bit of respectability back on the scoreboard they never looked in danger of catching Essendon. The Bombers regained its first quarter intensity late in the term when they piled on four goals and extended their lead to 58-points at half-time. Scott Lucas was dominant across half-back and used his long kicking to carry the ball out of defence. “Lucas gave the team a lot of drive out of defence. He is reading the play so well and has really settled down at centre half back and playing great footy,” assistant coach Mark Harvey said after the game. The skipper James Hird was again been in fine touch finishing with 14 disposals to half-time.
The 36,138 crowd witnessed a moment in history at the 19.50 minute mark of the third term. Lloyd booted his eighth goal for the game and with that overtook Simon Madden’s 575 goal kicking record. It was a special occasion in the history of the Essendon Football Club. Apart from Lloyd officially becoming Essendon’s all time best goal kicker the third quarter was fairly non-eventful. The pace and skill level of the game deteriorated and both team’s booted three goals.
The Bombers continued to work hard in the final term and finished with five goals for the quarter to push the winning margin out to 67-points. It was close to Essendon’s best victory for the season and a convincing performance heading into the business end of the year. “It was really pleasing to see the improvement in the intensity and skill level today. It was a real credit to them how they used the ball and played a good running game,” Harvey said.
Ted Whitten junior presented Hird with the Whitten Cup at the end of the match and an emotional Hird paid tribute to teammate Adam Ramanauskas. “We love you mate. The courage you have shown is inspirational and everything else we do for the rest of the year is for you,” Hird said.
