Glory and Fame: Celebrating the Back to Back Premierships of 84/85

Premiership team

It was arguably the greatest era in the history of the Essendon Football Club and on Saturday 4 July this Club gathered at Crown Palladium to pay tribute to the people that made it happen.

Glory and Fame: A Celebration of the 84/85 Premierships was an unforgettable night for Essendon fans as they spent an evening with the players that made it happen.

It was a side littered with champions of the Club – Madden, Watson, Daniher and Baker. There were the silky smooth skills of Foulds, Neagle and Ezard matched by the blue-collar brigade of Clarke, Williams and Heard. And of course there were the characters – Vander Haar, Duckworth, Harvey and Hawker. What a magnificent era and what a magnificent night for Essendon supporters.

Glory & Fame: The book

Glory and Fame: the book

Throughout the 1970s, the Essendon Football Club was in a state of transition. The Bombers made just 3 finals appearances that decade - a shock to the system for a club accustomed to winning - but off the field the foundations were being laid for sustained success.

Twenty five years on from the drought breaking 1984 premiership, Glory and Fame: The Rise and Rise of the Essendon Football Club retraces the Bombers' glorious renaissance. In a series of essays, complimented by iconic photographs, Australia's leading football writers look at the pivotal moments, and the central figures behind the club's transformation into a football superpower.

Match of the Century - 1984 V 2000

Match of the Century

They are two teams most often referred to when it comes to answering the question: Which was the greatest Essendon team of all time? The 1984 team produced a brilliant comeback to bury a star-studded Hawthorn line-up. The 2000 team produced a season unlike any other – losing just one game for the season on the way to winning the flag.

We have decided it is time to let fans try and answer the question. These sides match up remarkably well but we want you to look at each match-up and name your preferred option. Each winning match up will score a goal for their side and we will tally them up to produce a final score in the match of the century 1984 v 2000.
