Match of the Century - 1984 v 2000

Match of the Century

They are two teams most often referred to when it comes to answering the question: Which was the greatest Essendon team of all time? The 1984 team produced a brilliant comeback to bury a star-studded Hawthorn line-up. The 2000 team produced a season unlike any other – losing just one game for the season on the way to winning the flag.

We have decided it is time to let fans try and answer the question. These sides match up remarkably well but we want you to look at each match-up and name your preferred option. Each winning match up will score a goal for their side and we will tally them up to produce a final score in the Match of the Century 1984 v 2000.

To provide each team with four bench players we have selected two players from the 1985 Premiership side that best matched up with players on the 2000 Grand Final team bench. For the purposes of the Match of the Century these players were Steve Alessio and Steve Carey.

This is arguably Essendon’s two greatest teams taking to the biggest stage to decide the title. Make your selection based on who you would think would win each match up at their best.

Cast your votes simply by completing the form below each week.
