MARK THOMPSON
PROFILE
Mark joined Essendon from Airport West through the local zoning system. His
first game was against Sydney at the SCG in 1983. Mark was a member of the
VFL reserves Premiership side in 1983. He played in the Foster's Cup Grand
Final sides in 1984, 1990 and 1993.
He played a vital part in the 1984, 1985 and 1993 Premiership sides. He received the award for most determined player in 1984 and 1986. He was named most improved player in 1985. Thompson won the best clubman award in 1985. His stand out years were 1987 and 1990 where he won the club's best and fairest player. He was announced in the AFL Team of the Year in 1990. Thompsn captained the side from 1992-1995, then passed the captaincy over to Gary O'Donnell. He also represented Victoria in State of Origin football in 1986. Mark was been a fine asset to the Essendon Football Club where he played many great games. His great determination and desire to win took him a long way in football which made him one of the best backmen to ever play at the Essendon Football Club. Mark earned the nickname 'BOMBER' for his dedication and the work he has put into the club. After retiring during 1996, Bomber spent the next two seasons on the Essendon coaching staff. Mark was coach of the reserve team and the assistant coach for the seniors. He is now senior coach at Geelong Football Club. |
