At present Essendon’s affiliated sporting clubs include men’s and women’s hockey, cricket, netball, croquet, baseball, lawn bowls, tennis, water polo and athletics. It is an affiliation that touches thousands of people across Melbourne’s north-western suburbs and Windy Hill is at the centre of this sporting hub.

Essendon represented at Commonwealth Games
One the highlight for Essendon Football Club’s affiliated sporting bodies this year was the representation at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, with numerous athletes competing in sports ranging from athletics to lawn bowls.
Congratulations must go to Sarah Jamieson, Alwyn Jones and Chris Erikson from Athletics Essendon who all won medals on the track representing Australia - Sarah taking silver in the 1500m, Alwyn bronze in the triple jump and Chris bronze in the 50km walk.
Australia was not the only country with Essendon representation at the Commonwealth Games, with Essendon Bowls Club’s very own Victor Brincat stepping out for his native Malta. Brincat, 62, competed in the Men’s Triples at the Games, reaching the quarterfinals where they were eventually defeated by Northern Ireland after wins in the group stages against Kenya, Niue and Canada.
Malta’s only loss during the group stages came against host nation Australia, which surely would have tested the allegiances of Brincat’s Essendon teammates as they were torn between cheering for their home country or their close friend.
Stawell Gift comes to Windy Hill
The Essendon community congratulates Adrian Mott who became the first current member of Athletics Essendon to win the Stawell Gift when he finished in the impressive time of 11.98 in this year’s event.
The 20-year-old former St Bernard’s College student was an 8-1 race favourite after a betting plunge from his former schoolmates at the calling of the card on the Friday night before the running of the 125th Gift.
Mott first commenced running for Athletics Essendon when he was 15 and is now looking forward to establishing himself as an Australian representative.

Essendon Football Club captain Matthew Lloyd has joined the Essendon Cricket Club as its Number 1 Ticket Holder for season 2006/07. Matthew’s credentials would appear to be impeccable after a couple of impressive performances against the Australian cricket team at the annual Windy Hill cricket day.
Season 2006/07 shapes to be a big one for the Essendon Cricket Club, with the addition of Englishman and current Nottinghamshire player Sammut Patel. Patel joins recent Englishmen Vikram Solanki and Alan Mullally to play at Windy Hill.
