On The Ball
On The Ball is a school-based health promotion program – run by the Bill Hutchison Foundation in conjunction with the Essendon Football Club - that uses elite athletes as role models in the delivery of a resiliency program.
The goal of On The Ball is to improve the long-term health outcomes for young people, through developing problem-solving and decision-making skills and building a sense of belonging. The program targets Year 8 students and uses Essendon players and elite level netballers as facilitators.

Literacy Program
The Essendon Football Club has established a literacy program in partnership with the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) to assist children and young people improve their literacy skills. The program uses EFC players, such as Patrick Ryder(right), as role models who will engage directly with children and young people by becoming reading role models. Players will have regular contact visits with the children over the course of the school year. An online component, including literacy-based games and activities designed by ALNF, has been developed to broaden the reach of the program.
After the success of our Literacy program in 2008, we have created a novel that will be utilised in the program as the key reading material for students to read together with the Essendon players. The novel, entitled Pencil O'Reilly - Bush Champion, has been written so it is suitable for not only reluctant readers, but also interesting and educational for primary aged students across Australia. The novel will be available on the website to purchase very soon.
ALNF is dedicated to raising language, literacy and numeracy standards in Australia and raises funds to develop, implement and sustain innovative projects for individuals, families and communities.
ALNF believes that literacy and numeracy skills are a critical element in enabling all people to fulfil their dreams. Without these skills individuals, families and whole communities are powerless in realising their full potential.
