HOME : INTERACTIVE : GOAL OF THE WEEK

In season 2002 the BomberLand website is running a Goal of the Week competition. Following each weekend's match we will ask Essendon fans to vote on the three best Essendon goals and marks. And for those users who want to refresh their memories, they should tune into Bombers Backyard on Foxtel between 6.15 and 6.30pm every Thursday night.

Note: any photos accompanying the goals below are not necessarily from the corresponding goal.

1. JASON JOHNSON - FIRST QUARTER

Jason Johnson - end of the first quarter and Cory McGrath kicks inside 50m to Scott Lucas on the lead. The mark is spoiled and Jason Johnson picks up the loose ball and runs in and kicks the Bombers third goal.
   

2. DEAN RIOLI - SECOND QUARTER

Dean Rioli - dying seconds of the second quarter and ball-up at half-forward. McVeigh gathers ball and handballs to Dean Rioli. Rioli runs inside 50m and goals for the Bombers.
   

3. MARK JOHNSON - FOURTH QUARTER

Mark Johnson - early in the final quarter and Mark Johnson marks on Essendon's 50m. He plays on and kicks long from 50m to goal for the Bombers.
   

PREVIOUS WINNERS

ROUND 1. SCOTT LUCAS - FIRST QUARTER

With Essendon failing to capitalise on its first quarter dominance a goal was becoming critical and Scott Lucas came up with the goods. Lucas marked outside the 50m arc and bombed a 70m drop punt straigh through the middle - it was a magnificent kick.

ROUND 2. JAMES HIRD - FIRST QUARTER

Deep into the first quarter James Hird positions himself front and square at the foot of a marking contest about 30m out from the Essendon goal. The ball spills Hird's way and with a deft touch he guides the ball onto his right foot and snaps the ball through for a magnificent goal.

ROUND 3. JASON JOHNSON - FOURTH QUARTER

In the final minutes of the fourth quarter Jason Johnson picks up the wet ball from a spilled Jacobs mark and puts it on the outside of his boot 35 metres out and it bounces through.

ROUND 4. ADAM RAMANAUSKAS - FIRST QUARTER

Late in the first quarter Jason Johnson handballs to Ramanauskas just inside 50m. Rama weaves and puts it onto his left boot from 45m out and puts it through for a goal.

ROUND 5. MATTHEW LLOYD - SECOND QUARTER

Start of the second quarter - Matthew Lloyd kicks for goals 45m out on a slight angle for the Bombers second goal.

ROUND 6. SHANE HARVEY - FIRST QUARTER

Shane Harvey - Harvey from the boundary line 15m out, snapped on the right boot and bounced through in a "Daicos-style goal" for Essendon's first goal of the game and Harvey's first AFL goal.

ROUND 7. ADAM RAMANAUSKAS - FIRST QUARTER

Justin Blumfield chips the ball to Ramanauskas 70m out. Rama has a bounce and goals on the run from 50m out for the Bombers first goal.

ROUND 8. JASON JOHNSON - FIRST QUARTER

Early in the first quarter, Dean Rioli on the run handballed to Jason Johnson. Johnson weaves around two St.Kilda players to kick the Bombers second goal on the run from 45m out.

ROUND 9. JUSTIN BLUMFIELD - FOURTH QUARTER

Ten minutes to go in the fourth quarter and Paul Barnard kicks towards goal. The ball is bouncing towards goal and Blumfield kicks the ball in mid-air to put the Bombers in front.

ROUND 10. DUSTIN FLETCHER - FOURTH QUARTER

Dustin Fletcher - 22 and a half minute mark of the final quarter and Paul Barnard bombed the ball long to the goal square from outside 50m. Dustin Fletcher and Mick Martyn running onto the ball and Fletcher kicks ball mid-air to put Essendon behind by one point.

ROUND 11. DAVID HILLE - SECOND QUARTER

David Hille - Deep in forward pocket, close to the boundary line, Hille runs around and snaps on right boot for Bombers second goal.

ROUND 12. PAUL BARNARD - FOURTH QUARTER

Paul Barnard - Closing minutes of the final quarter and Danny Jacobs stabs a pass to Paul Barnard on the lead. The ball bounces and Barnard gathers, breaks the tackle and kicks over his shoulder on the right boot to goal for the Bombers.

ROUND 13. MARK MCVEIGH - FIRST QUARTER

Mark McVeigh - 11 minute mark of the first quarter and Wellman at half-back kicks to McVeigh clear on the wing. McVeigh has a bounce and goals from 50m out.

ROUND 14. MATTHEW LLOYD - FOURTH QUARTER

Matthew Lloyd - 12.40 minute mark of final quarter. Lloyd takes a strong mark on the lead and has a set shot on a tight angle from 55 metres out and goals for the Bombers.

ROUND 15. JUSTIN BLUMFIELD - THIRD QUARTER

Justin Blumfield - Midway through the third quarter Justin Blumfield took the ball just inside the 50 metre arc, ducked, weaved, beat two opponents and kicked a much needed goal for the Bombers.

ROUND 16. JOEL REYNOLDS - FOURTH QUARTER

Joel Reynolds - three minutes to go in the final quarter and Reynolds picks up the loose ball at 50m mark. He spins around and kicked on his left foot to goal from 45m out on a tight angle.

ROUND 17. PAUL SALMON - FOURTH QUARTER

Paul Salmon - 23 minute mark of the final quarter and from a boundary throw in, 15m out for goal - Paul Salmon picks up the loose ball and snaps for the Bombers seventh goal.

ROUND 18. BLAKE CARACELLA - FOURTH QUARTER

Blake Caracella - At the 20 minute mark of the final term, Blake Caracella runs on to the ball deep in the forward pocket. He takes the ball just inside the boundary line, kicks across his body right on the line and the ball sails through for an amazing goal.

ROUND 19. MATTHEW LLOYD - SECOND QUARTER

Matthew Lloyd - Closing minutes of the second quarter and Matthew Lloyd gathers the ball in pack of players and snaps on the right foot. The ball bounces through for the Bombers sixth goal.

ROUND 20. MARK BOLTON - SECOND QUARTER

Mark Bolton - opening minutes of the second quarter and Mark Bolton picks up the loose ball and handballs to Hird. Hird under pressure handballs back to Bolton on the run, who kicks for goal on a tight angle and threads it through for six points from 40m out.

ROUND 21. BLAKE CARACELLA - FOURTH QUARTER

Blake Caracella - at the seven minute mark of the final quarter, Blake Caracella wasn't content with his contender for goal of the week form the first quarter, so he backed it up with an almost identical goal down the other end of the ground. He took the ball on the boundary line about 40 metres out from goal, and took off. He then kicked the ball along the ground superbly for his third goal of the match.

ROUND 22. MATTHEW LLOYD - SECOND QUARTER

Matthew Lloyd - early in the second quarter and David Hille's shot for goal falls short in the goal square. Matthew Lloyd being held by Beaumont in the goal square, manages to kick the ball off the ground for the Bombers sixth goal.

ELIMINATION FINAL. JASON JOHNSON - FOURTH QUARTER

Jason Johnson - Mid-way through the final quarter and Misiti kicks out of centre to half-forward. Jason Johnson runs onto the ball and evades three West Coast players and runs inside 50m to goal for the Bombers.
