The Bombers then went forward with McVeigh again involved in the action. After a series of throw-ins and ball-ups, the Dons eventually broke free with Peverill kicking towards the centre of goals. Reimers then took a strong overhead mark, played on and kicked his first goal.
The Dockers then pressed forward, but Essendon had the numbers in defence and were able to rebound.
The Dons then went into attack, and Lovett picked a great time to kick his first goal of the game. He received the ball at centre half forward, used his pace to beat two opponents, and then kicked his first goal from 45m out.
But the Dockers had a very quick reply through Carr. He took possession deep in the pocket, and kicked a very good goal from close to the boundary line. It reduced the margin to 18 points.
The game then went up a notch, with both sides throwing everything at eachother knowing the game was on the line.
The Dockers had the next shot on goal - but under pressure the kick by Head was well wide and out on the full.
But shortly after Sandilands marked 35m out from goal, but his kick drifted across the face of goals for a behind.
Eventually Fremantle’s forward pressure paid off, and it was Pavlich who benefited. He used his strength to beat a defender in the forward pocket, run on and kick his fifth goal from only metres out. Halfway through the last quarter the margin was back to two goals.
Then the Bombers put together a fantastic chain of handballs to get out of danger in defence. Jetta then kicked long inside 50, but his kick was just wide and through for a behind.
But Pavlich was in top form, and he lined up for another shot on goal from 25m out on a tight angle. He went back and kicked his sixth goal – meaning that the margin was back to only one goal.
Fremantle were getting on top, as they again went forward from the centre bounce. But the Essendon defenders had to stand tall, and they did this time under pressure.
Jetta then kicked the Bombers inside 50 and Lucas took a strong mark in front. He went back and kicked his second goal at a very important time in the match.
Fremantle then pushed forward again, and again the Essendon defenders had to work hard. Ryder was doing everything he could to keep Pavlich out of the play, throwing himself into the contest.
Stanton then intercepted a Dockers pass, and kicked the Bombers inside 50 to find Lloyd all by himself. He marked 45m out directly in front, went back, and kicked long, but it moved away to the right for only one behind.
McVeigh was playing a brilliant game, and he was vital in stopping a few Fremantle attacks.
The ball then went long inside 50 towards Fremantle’s goals, and under huge pressure the bombers forced the ball through for a behind.
It was incredibly tense footy in the final few minutes, with Fremantle going into attack and the Dons trying their best to defend.
Then with 90 seconds left on the clock, Tarrant kicked a very good goal from a tight angle in the pocket. It reduced the margin to only 4 points, and the Dons were going to have to lift again to hold on.
Then the Dockers went forward and McPhee put his body on the line for a huge hit, and saved an almost certain goal for the Dockers. Truly team-lifting stuff! The Bombers then kicked to the wing where Hille took a very strong mark. An incredible game of football!
The Dockers were still pushing forward, but Lonergan was able to rebound for the Bombers out to the wing. It was enough – as Stanton kicked the Bombers inside 50 the siren sounded to record a fantastic win for the Bombers!
It was a brilliant win for the Bombers – hard-fought, with both sides really showing terrific heart in the final quarter. But Essendon were able to hold on, and give the team their third win in a row going into the bye weekend.
