"A very good effort to hang on. Just one thing. MacPhee is not a forward! Play him on the wing or as an attacking half back. His almost game saving and desperate lunge at the ball in the dying moments was fantastic. He has more awareness in the back half and is all at sea in the forward line."

"It was a very lucky and to some extent unimpressive win. There was a lot to like about the persistence but it was a horrible game and the 1-on-1 accountability of the previous few weeks was not there. Too many uncontested possessions to the opposition and how a fullback can play on at a kick-in and get outside D50 before there is any pressure is beyond me. Jobe reads the play brilliantly but his disposal has to get better. Nice to see Leroy having a major influence on the game. Encouraging signs but need to improve."

"Two months ago I stated that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that Essendon fans needed to be patient and give Matthew Knights a fair go! Where are those "knockers" now? Admittedly, 3 wins in succession is hardly sufficient to set the football world on fire, but in the Bombers case it does show that players are gradually starting to gel with each other, team spirit is improving and many of the youngsters are instilling much needed pace, flair and enthusiasm into the side....very evident in recent weeks! I see a bright future ahead for this proud club in the not too distant future, which is very pleasing indeed!!"

I got very worried after Fletcher got hurt, but Ryder did a great number on Pav. What has happened to Lucas? This one was “a stinker” for him. Please don’t drop him coach; players of his caliber can come good in a flash. LRJ – superb. I also think that Freemantle does not deserve to be near the bottom; they are much better than that, so this win should not be underrated. If we can beat Brisbane, some people will start to take us very seriously. "

"Could probably classify this as a gutsy win with Fletcher off since half time and a couple of other players being a bit proppy. Could definitely see Essendon's lack of fitness on the bigger ground, but I also thought the team lacked the same intensity that shone through against Carlton. Lucas needs a run in the VFL during the week's break while more work needs to be done on both the offensive and defensive kick-ins. Freo's ability to get free men was telling.
