Essendon players and coaches will have a five day break ahead of next week’s clash against West Coast.

The football department will be on leave from Sunday through to Thursday this week during their schedule Round 13 bye.

Coming off a 43-point win over Gold Coast on Saturday, coach James Hird said the break came at a good time for his players.

“The whole club deserves time off this week,” he said.

“On the field it has been a really good start to the year and being at 9/3 (nine wins, three losses) is a very good position to be at, at the half way point of the season.

“We’ll give our players five days off to have complete time away from the club, but because we play in about 10 days time, we’ll need to start preparing for the game from Thursday onwards.”

Essendon will face off against the ninth-placed West Coast at Patersons Stadium next Thursday night, but Hird said it remained a danger game.

“We’ve got a huge game against West Coast coming up and that’s our next focus.”
