Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton believes a solid training program over the bye week was the catalyst for the teams strong performance against Richmond on Saturday night.

The Bombers took part in a heavy training load during the recent break focusing on improving their ball movement into the forward line.

Stanton said it was positive to see training habits beginning to be implemented on game day.

"We trained pretty hard over the break as we saw it as an opportunity to get better," Stanton said.

"We weren't satisfied with the way we were going with  our football in the first nine weeks of the season."

"Every team has differ et ideas on how they use the break but we found it an opportunity to get better and launch into the second half of the season."

Essendon scored more than 100 points for the first time since Round 3 in Saturday night's win against the Tigers.

Stanton said the improvements on the scoreboard stemmed from more efficient ball movement out of defence.

"It is about getting the ball moving forward to give our forwards the opportunity," he said.

"It has been publicised that we have been stuck on nine or less goals for four or five weeks in a row and we just felt that came from our poor ball movement."

The veteran midfielder said it was important that the team continued to perform consistently for an entire game.

"It has been a bit of a roller coaster and it was good to come out after a bye to play some consistent four quarter football," he said.

"That is going to be what we look for throughout the rest of the year moving forward."

"It will be interesting to see how the players respond after the win and we are looking forward to the last twelve games of the year."
