A large crowd gathered at St Monica’s Catholic Church in Moonee Ponds on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the life of former Essendon Chairman Graeme McMahon.

McMahon sadly passed away at the age of 74 last week after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Premiership player and current board member Simon Madden said the service was a lovely celebration of Graeme’s life.

“It is always sad in these instances but when you have got a great group of people to salute a person who has done some great things in his life it is always a great tribute,” Madden said.

“His friend, his brother, Travis Auld and his son all spoke very highly of him and provided great tributes on the day.”

“It is always sad but when someone has done so many good things in their life there is a little bit of peace about it and it becomes a tribute to what he has done in his life.”

The 2000 premiership cup sat at the front of the church throughout the service as a constant reminder of his legacy to the Essendon Football Club.

“The word for me was resolute, if he took on something he really wanted to work it all the way through.”

“His family was first and whatever else he did he made sure he fitted it in with his family first.”

“It was a great tribute and I was pleased I went because you have to show respect to someone who has been so good in their life.”
