Young Essendon midfielder Will Hams has revealed he hopes for a return to football this season despite a number of injury set backs.

The budding 20-year-old has been unable to take to the field in 2014 due to hip surgery earlier in the year, but he admitted he aims to play football this season.

“I’m starting to progress really well now, I’m up to about 7½ km’s running and started to introduce ball skills this week, so hopefully I’ll get back into training in the next coming weeks,” Hams said.

“I’m still striving to get back for a game at the moment, it’s a bit up in the air, but I’ve got to keep positive and find a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

Hams played two games last year in his debut season after being recruited through the pre-season draft with pick six.

Albeit a brief appearance, he demonstrated his strong endurance and ferocious attack on the ball, proving he is a player of the future.

The up and coming midfielder expressed the difficulties he has faced throughout 2014 during a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

“It has been a bit of a frustrating year for me, I’ve never really had much of an injury before,” Hams said.

“I had a few niggles with my hip early on in pre season, so it all started in January.”

“We tried to work through it doing physio, but I couldn’t really get to a playing condition, so I ended up going in for an operation about ten weeks ago.”

“So to not play a game and to be out away from the group the whole year has been disappointing.”

Whether he returns to the field this season of not Hams has his sights set on a bigger and better 2015.

“All I really am hoping for is to get back into training and be right for pre season when it’s starts and have a really big one,” he said.
