Essendon senior assistant coach Simon Goodwin expects every player will have their versatility tested as they attempt to find the right balance within the team over the remaining two games of the home and away season.

Jason Winderlich moved to the forward line against West Coast with Dyson Heppell dropping behind the ball to play across halfback.

Goodwin highlighted the importance of players being able to play right across the field.

“We will continue to throw the team around on game day to find exactly what we need,” he said.

“We try to develop a team all year that is really flexible, both in our key positions, but also throughout our midfield and in defence.

“And that’s really where we are at with our side, is to have great flexibility and players being able to play their role no matter where they play on the ground, and find a mix that’s going to be successful on the day.”

After a sub-standard first half last weekend against the Eagles, the Bombers managed to turn it around, playing some scintillating footy in the second half to take the four points.

Goodwin conceded the coaching staff is endeavouring to capture and maintain that form ahead of the remaining two home-and-away games.

“We thought that the second half (against West Coast) was a real kick start to the way we want to play our style of footy and we just need to try and continue it on over the next couple of weeks,” he said.

“We’re really trying to emulate the way we played in that second half last weekend and see if we can carry that through and get into some good form.”

The Bombers play their final home game of the season against the Gold Coast on Saturday, with a win to put Essendon in the box seat to play finals football in 2014.

In a crucial stat, Gold Coast rank equal second in the AFL for contested possessions per game this season (145.6), however Goodwin admits the Bombers need to invest majority of their time into the way they play their own footy.

“We just have to worry about how we are going to go about our game,” he said.

“Obviously contested ball is a big part of the game, and in the last few weeks we’ve been outstanding. It’s giving us a great advantage to move the ball forward and play the game in our half.

“They are (Gold Coast) a highly talented team, they’ve got some real quality through their midfield, so we’re going to have to make sure we prepare really well, then try to limit their impact within the game, but also when we get our opportunity to play our style of footy.

“But it’s exciting, we’re really trying to play our best footy again, we probably haven’t been able to do that for a little while.”
