Essendon veteran Dustin Fletcher will make a decision on his playing future once the current season is over.

The 39-year-old defender is out of contract at the end of the season and is likely to miss the remainder of 2014 with a finger injury.

“We are still going through a few bits and pieces at the moment,” Fletcher said.

“Obviously Hirdy has been back a week so I haven’t properly caught up with him so it is just a wait and see.”

"We've had a bit of a chat, but in saying that, it was a while ago.”

“We'll just wait and see, apart from this finger the body's there abouts and still feels pretty good so in the next couple of weeks we'll sit down.”

The 393 game veteran is confident he could play on again for a 22nd season of VFL/AFL.

“The boys have been doing well with finals and so I have just been trying to do my bit behind the scenes to help the boys out to do their job out on the ground,” he told MMM Radio.

“I am keen to go again but I am only going to do it for the right reasons and I will make that decision when it comes.”

Fletcher has not given a great deal of thought to life after football but indicated he would be keen to stay in the AFL system in a coaching role.

“I have been around a while but I have completed the different coaching courses,” he said.

“I would like that development type role rather then an assistant coaching position.”

“Footy is what I have known for 24 years at the top level so I would like to stay involved but we will just wait and see.”
