Essendon veteran Paul Chapman has confirmed he has a strong relationship with new teammate Adam Cooney.

Chapman has signed a new one-year deal to play on into 2015 after an impressive debut season in the red and black.

The Herald Sun reported earlier this month the 33-year-old was unhappy with the acquisition of the former Western Bulldogs midfielder during the trade period.

“That is not true at all, we are very happy to have Coons here because he is a fantastic player as we all know,” Chapman said.

“The article was ninety per cent right but the fact that he was mentioned is not right at all and it wasn’t nice that he was mentioned in it.

“He probably didn’t feel that good that he was bought into it either but I have spoken to him about it and he realises it was out of my control and it was just opinions.

“We are happy to have Coons here and we have picked up a lot of good players so hopefully that is good ingredients for what is to be a good year ahead.”

The Norm Smith Medallist played a mix of time through the midfield and up forward during the 2014 season.

He finished with 22 goals from his 20 games and was most influential in the club’s elimination final loss to North Melbourne.

Chapman is happy to play wherever the coach decides in 2015.

“I have spoken to Hirdy a little bit, it will be similar to last year with a bit of time up forward and in the midfield.”

“I suppose if I play well in the midfield I might play a bit longer there and it depends on how the games are going.

“There are so many variables but I will just be happy to play whether it be forward or midfielder.”

The veteran forward is confident he can still play an important role in the team’s success during the upcoming season.

“I was happy with the way I started and finished the year last year, I had a few issues through the middle stages,” Chapman said.

“Hopefully this year can be an injury free one and I can put my best foot forward and who knows what it holds.”
