Essendon captain Jobe Watson says the bond between his International Rules Series teammates is continuing to build ahead of Saturday night’s game against Ireland in Perth.

Watson is playing alongside club teammates Dustin Fletcher and Brendon Goddard, as well as some of the best players in the competition including Joel Selwood, Luke Hodge, Travis Boak and Nick Riewoldt in the 24-man squad.

“We’ve been able to have some time training everyday and we’re getting used to the game,” Watson said.

“As a team, we’re really starting to build some chemistry and obviously there are a lot of talented players and hopefully it will translate to a competitive performance on Saturday night, particularly knowing that the Irish are a very good side.

“Getting used to the round ball was a challenge early but we’ve been training hard and hopefully it results in a good game on Saturday night.

“It has been a fantastic week. We’ve been able to get a lot of stuff done, a lot of training. It’s been well run by the AFL and everyone seems to be having a very enjoyable time. It’s been very worthwhile.”

Amongst his many accolades including a Brownlow Medal and three club Best and Fairest awards, the 29-year-old said it was an honour to represent his country in the International Rules Series.

“It is an honour to be a part of this game and something I’ve never done before,” Watson said.

“I was really keen to be involved in this series and especially with such a talented group. Given the series probably hasn’t received the type of competitive games in the past few years, I know a lot of the guys are keen to be part of a really competitive team this year.”
