In the lead up to Thusday night’s National Draft on the Gold Coast we take a look back in time at some of the best and worst on draft night for the Bombers.

On Thursday night the club will enter the draft with just three selections, including the elevation of Patrick Ambrose to the senior list, this is a vast difference from 1992.

In the 1992 draft the club entered the draft with eleven live selections including one father/son selection.

That father/son selection, Dustin Fletcher, would go on to be a legend of our game and will continue to don the sash in search of the magical 400 game milestone in 2015.

With the first selection in the 1992 draft the club selected Michael Prior from East Perth who would go on to play 90 matches at AFL level.

Controversially he chose to remain at East Perth against the wish of coach Kevin Sheedy during the 1993 season in search of regular senior football.

He missed the club’s 1993 baby Bomber premiership win but would go on to play 81 matches in the red and black before moving to West Coast.

The Bombers took another two Western Australian’s with their next two seletions in the 1992 draft with Tony Delaney (pick 12) and Scott Cummings (pick 20).

Delaney played just two seasons at the Bombers between 1993-1993 before going on to finish his career with 76 matches for three clubs including Fremantle and St Kilda.

Cummings played 40 games for the Bombers between 1994 and 1996 booting 83 goals in those early days of his career.

He was traded to Port Adelaide at the end of the 1996 season in exchange for pick 2 (Chris Heffernan) and pick 28 (Jason Johnson) in the draft.

Cummings would go on to have a successful career as a powerful full forward at Port Adelaide, West Coast and Collingwood by booting 349 goals from just 128 matches.

Also traded to Port Adelaide after four years at the club was Che Cockatoo Collins, originally taken with pick 42 in the 1992 draft.

Cockatoo Collins played 85 matches for the Bombers booting 109 goals before moving to the Power where he kicked 106 goals in his 75 games.

Many would say the gem of the 1992 draft for Esssendon did not come until selection 87 when they selected a young defender from Ferntree Gully.

That pick was Damien Hardwick, who would go on to play 153 games with the Bombers as a tough and solid defender including playing a key role in the club’s 2000 premiership success.

Hardwick went on to play a key role in Port Adelaide’s premiership win in 2004 and is now a successful coach at AFL level in charge of returning Richmond into the top eight.
