With one spot remaining on the club’s list for the 2015 season Essendon will look to secure a young ruckman to support Tom Bellchambers and Jonathan Giles.

The Bombers enter Wednesday’s rookie draft with one live selection and in search of a back up big man.

Coach James Hird said the talent pool at the National Draft did not include any ruckman of the class required for a first round selection.

“We will look in the rookie draft for a ruckman, it just didn’t fall our way for a ruckman this time,” Hird said.

“We just didn’t think one would get through of the quality that we wanted.

“We will look in the rookie draft to see if there is a ruckman around but if not Dutsin Fletcher may play in the ruck, who knows.”

Hird is confident the club has had a successful off-season period including the addition of mature aged recruits Adam Cooney, James Gwilt and Jonathan Giles to the side.

“We are very happy, obviously the trading we did when Paddy left was about the here and now,”

“It was about making sure we had a strong list to compete at the back end of the season in 2015 and we think we have done that with the players we picked up.”

“This draft was about the future and making sure we looked after the future and I think we have done that.”

The Bombers coach is confident that the club has now recruited a list that will see them challenge the best sides in the competition.

“We have one more pick now in the rookie draft and they will go away and look at our options but we are very happy with the list,” Hird said.

“It is a bit more mature than it has been over the past four or five years but with that maturity comes the ability to go a bit further then we have.”
