Essendon Football Club, together with official on-field supplier Adidas, has unveiled its 2015 Dreamtime Guernsey which will be worn against Richmond at the annual Dreamtime at the ‘G clash in Round 9.

The Dreamtime Guernsey was designed by Indigenous artist Nathan Patterson who is a Wagiman from the Northern Territory.

Patterson said his design is truly unique and tells the important story of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia coming together.

“The design represents Essendon Football Club’s enduring support of Indigenous communities through the footprints of Michael Long’s walk and the recruitment of Indigenous football players,” Patterson said.

“It highlights the ripple effect this has had not only in bringing together our Aboriginal communities but also in reconciling Indigenous Australia and non-Indigenous Australia walking together.”

“It’s going to be a proud moment for me to see the players walk out on the ground with my design, but I think it will be a proud moment for all Indigenous Australians.”

Sitting alongside the Club’s iconic red sash, Patterson has painted multiple circles which symbolise the many different communities across Australia.

Another major element of the design features two large circles linked together by four footprints, this represents Michael Long’s historic walk to Canberra to put Indigenous issues back on the agenda.

The Dreamtime at the ‘G logo and the artist’s explanation on the inside of the neck have also been incorporated into the limited edition Guernsey.

Courtenay Dempsey said the Dreamtime Guernsey continues the positive work the Club is doing with the Indigenous community across Australia.

“I feel really honoured to pull on this Guernsey,” Dempsey said.

“The Guernsey shows how the people before us, Michael Long and Nicky Winmar, paved the way for Indigenous players in the game.”

“When I came here, I understood what the Club had done, especially for the Indigenous players and I was very pleased to be drafted to this football Club.”

Adam Cooney revealed he’s excited about the prospect of his Dreamtime at the ‘G debut.

“I’ll play this week and then hopefully the Dreamtime at the ‘G game, which will be massive,” Cooney said.

“It’s always great to play in front of big crowds and the Dreamtime at the ‘G is a great way for both Club’s to celebrate the great Indigenous players and their contribution towards the game of AFL football.”
