Essendon’s Interim Senior Coach Matthew Egan says it’s no surprise other club’s are signalling interest in Jake Carlisle.

North Melbourne Coach Brad Scott stated yesterday the Kangaroos would look at Carlisle if he became available.

“I think he was just answering the question honestly,” Egan said today.

“I think every club would want Jake Carlisle in their team, he’s a 23 year old key position player that can play forward and back.”

After kicking 14 goals in the first half of the year, Carlisle has further highlighted his versatility by moving to defence since returning from an ankle injury.

Egan doesn’t expect continued contract speculation to impact on Carlisle’s performance in the final two games of the season.

“I don’t think much distracts Jake to be honest, he’s a laid back character,” he said.

“I spoke to him a few times about different things and nothing seems to phase him.

“From our perspective he seems really engaged with the group.  I think he’s in a good frame of mind.”

With Cale Hooker’s move to the forward line proving a success, Essendon now boast some of the best swingmen in the game.

Hooker, Carlisle and Michael Hurley are strong at both ends of the ground and Egan hopes they will continue to play alongside each other beyond this season.

“He’s (Carlisle) a required player here, he’s obviously a real talent for us,” Egan said.

“At meetings he’s talking up, there have been a few things that have happened on game day where he’s shown great leadership for the club.

“From my perspective and the club’s perspective he seems in a good place.”
