Despite much talk, Essendon’s list may not undergo the significant restructure many are forecasting.

The club has come under scrutiny for what many believe is a slow and old list.

However, speaking after yesterday’s game, interim coach Matthew Egan is confident the current list has plenty of talent.

Egan believes those critical of the current list only need to look at the club’s VFL side to get a glimpse of what the future holds.

Decimated by injuries this year, coaches have had to put their faith in a number of ‘Baby Bombers’.

Players such as Shaun Edwards, Orazio Fantasia, Marty Gleeson, Jackson and Zach Merrett, Jayden Laverde and Kyle Langford are just a few of a long list of Bombers who have made the transition from Essendon VFL to the senior list.

It's these players the club will be able to build a future on.

“(The list) probably needs to be revamped a little bit, I don’t think it needs an overhaul,” Egan said.

“We’ve got some great young players coming through.

“We’re fourth on the ladder in the VFL and we had seven listed players playing.”

There are, however, a few obvious areas that the club does need to build on.

A lack of pace has definitely hurt the club throughout the year, especially after losing the speedy Travis Colyer halfway through the season.

“I think (the list) needs a few players added,” Egan said.

“I think a few players in the midfield, elite runners.

“You watch Richmond today and they just had so many different players that could go through their wings and middle."

Egan also flagged the importance of looking for a small key forward who can consistently hit the scoreboard.

The club stands to lose a number of key players at the end of the year with veterans Jason Winderlich and Dustin Fletcher expected to join Paul Chapman in announcing their retirement.

Essendon this year will secure key picks in the draft for the first time since 2012, which will be of great benefit to the club.

Having already secured deals with Colyer, Jackson and Zach Merrett, Fantasia and injured ruckman Tom Bellchambers so far this year, the club will look to continue to finalise a number of key contracts before the end of the year.
