Matthew Egan is keen to remain at Essendon but won’t be putting his hand up for the vacant senior coaching position.

The All-Australian defender has spent the last four seasons at the Bombers, initially as Forward Coach, but more recently working with the defence.

The former Cat was appointed interim Senior Coach when James Hird’s tenure came to an end.

“At this stage I don’t think I’ll apply for the job.  I think I just need some more years experience,” Egan said.

“The group needs a new voice and that’s someone that I can learn off as well.

“Whether we get a young coach or a more experienced coach, I think it’s important the group gets someone new and that will generate some excitement within the group.”

The Bombers play their final match of the season against Collingwood on Sunday.

Stand-in Captain Dyson Heppell acknowledged the players are disappointed with the way the year has panned out.

He said he was looking forward to finding out who the new Coach will be.

“I’d love a Coach that can be very hard on the group, who has been around a successful culture and knows what that looks like,” Heppell told The Footy Show.

“Overall I just want someone that’s very passionate to take the Club forward and forge some real success.

“I have full faith in the Club to be able to find the right man for the job.

“It is exciting times to see who will be the Coach of the Essendon Footy Club and we can’t wait to find out.”
