Jobe Watson is close to resuming full training as the Bombers begin their pre-season campaign.

The Brownlow Medal winner and his experienced teammates made their first appearance on the track today.

The second to fourth year players have been back in action for a fortnight.

Watson’s 2015 season was cut short by a shoulder injury but he trained today and will step up his workload over the coming weeks.

“The shoulder is good, I’m back doing everything,” he said.

“I’ll probably ease in to contact stuff over the first week or two.

“But once I get used to getting hit, I’ll be back in to full training.”

New Line Coach Guy McKenna will lead the Bombers on-ball division this season.

He will have recruits Matthew Leuenberger, Craig Bird and potentially some top-end on-ball talent secured at tomorrow night’s draft, to work with.

David Myers and Heath Hocking will also be like new recruits after playing just seven games between them last season.

“You’re going to need 10-12 guys who can run through the midfield,” Watson said.

“We didn’t have the year that we wanted to and specifically in the midfield so there is a big challenge there.

“’Bluey’ coming in brings a lot of experience and he’ll hopefully be able to guide the midfield to a successful campaign.”

For now though Watson said the focus will be on ensuring the team maximizes the four week training block in the lead up to Christmas.

“You can’t afford to waste any time, so as soon as you come back you’ve got to get back into the skills component of training,” he said.

“Looking at the program and what the guys have already been doing, it’s already been a heavy skills focus and I think that’ll continue until (the end of) December.”
