Michael Hartley feared his AFL career was over when Collingwood delisted him at the end of 2013.

His two seasons at the Magpies had been plagued by shoulder problems.

“I had a few injuries and thought maybe it’s a bit too much,” he said.

He re-launched his football career with Coburg in the VFL.

After a solid first season, he took his game to a new level with an increased focus on the offensive side of his game.

“As a defender, I was real defensive – I didn’t really attack and use my leg too much,” Harley said.

“Last year, I took a few more marks and kicked the footy a bit more so it turned out alright."

He played 18 games for Coburg, averaging 14 possessions (at an efficiency rate of 76%), six marks and four tackles.

That output was enough to win the Best and Fairest and gain selection in the VFL team of the year.

It also saw him earn a spot on the Bombers list and Hartley said he’s fit and ready for a big pre-season when he commences training with the Club.
