Essendon debutant Aaron Francis says playing his first game for the Club he grew up barracking for was a moment he’ll never forget.

The 18 year old collected 16 possessions in his first AFL game against Brisbane on Sunday.

Stationed predominately in defence, but switched forward late in the match, Francis also took seven marks (four contested) and had five one percenters.

“It was quick – the first five or ten minutes I blew up straight away but all of the other boys got around me, told me to keep pushing through,” Francis said.

“After that I had a few touches and started to open up I guess and I had a lot more time than I thought.”

Bombers Vice-Captain Mark Baguley and Francis’ father, David, presented the debutant with his jumper before the game.

“It’s something I’ve waited for my whole life, especially to do it with the Bombers, it’s something I’ll never forget,” Francis said.

“I’ve looked up to him (Baguley) over the last couple of years, so I’m very honoured and it’s a privilege to be a part of.”

Francis also said James Gwilt had played an important mentoring role since he arrived at the Bombers.

The South Australian played a handful of games for West Adelaide in the SANFL before he was drafted.

He had seven VFL games under his belt this season before he was called into John Worsfold’s office early last week where the Bombers Coach told the number six draft pick he’d be making his debut against the Lions.

“I knew pretty early so I kept it pretty relaxed and low-key,” Francis said.

“I told my parents and my mates and they were obviously stoked.”

Francis said his role was to defend first and beat his man before looking to take some marks.

His aim now is to stay in the side.

“I hope to not miss a game, that’s the best way to look at it,” he said.

“I’ve got my spot now and I’ve got to keep it, build my fitness and hopefully carry that through to the end of the year.”
