Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti has agreed to a three year contract extension which will see him remain at the Club until the end of 2019.

Walla has been one of the Club’s shining lights this season, and his blistering pace, silky skills and aggression around the contest has seen him earn ‘cult hero’ status amongst the Bomber faithful.

The 23 year-old said he was excited about continuing his career in the red and black.

“Essendon gave me the chance to play AFL, and I’m really happy to keep playing my footy for the Bombers,” McDonald-Tipungwuti said.

“I have learnt a lot this year since getting my chance to play senior footy, I know I have to keep working hard on my game but I’m really enjoying playing my football under Woosha.

“I have some really good mates at Essendon, especially Harts (Michael Hartley), I love playing with the boys, the fans have been great and I’m really excited about what we can do together as a team in the next few years.”

Walla was elevated onto the Club’s senior list and made his debut in Round 1, 2016 against the Gold Coast Suns. He’s played 19 games this season, including a variety of positions off half-back and up forward.

Senior Coach, John Worsfold, said Walla demonstrated great maturity and commitment to improving all aspects of his game.

“Walla is one of our most exciting young players with a bright future ahead of him,” Worsfold said.

“He works hard and has a long way to go with his development but we can’t deny his electric pace, clean use of the footy and his aggressive tackles add something very special to our line up.

“We’re really excited about where we are heading as a Club and to have Walla part of this journey next year is fantastic.”

Born in the Tiwi Islands, Walla played his junior football with the Tiwi Bombers in the Northern Territory Football League before moving to Victoria at 17 to play for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup and later Essendon’s VFL team.

Essendon List and Recruiting Manager, Adrian Dodoro, said ‘Walla’ had worked extremely hard to achieve his dream of playing AFL.

“Walla has worked tremendously hard to earn a spot in the team and this new deal is a great reward for him,” Dodoro said.

“Walla is a wonderful ambassador for our Club and is highly respected for his strong work ethic and professionalism.

“We are really looking forward to what he will continue to offer the Club next year, following a breakout start to his career this season.”
