Essendon has posted the fifth largest membership tally across the competition according to official AFL figures.

The Bombers total of 57,494 (as of July 31) was the fourth highest among Victorian clubs and came in a year where a number of key players were ruled out for the season.

“Our members have been so resilient and so loyal, I’ve got enormous admiration for their support – particularly at a time that’s been so challenging with the various issues that we’ve suffered and faced,” Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell said earlier this year.

“This year was always going to be very difficult on the back of the decision from the CAS.

“Our fans have been fantastic and we’ve got to try and keep making them proud.”

Essendon will conduct a series of initiatives throughout the Saturday’s match against Carlton to recognise the contribution of the members.

Kids under 15 will be admitted to the game free of charge, there will be giveaways throughout the game and a special post match ceremony involving all players, coaches and Club Legend Kevin Sheedy.

The Dons boast the fifth largest average crowd attendance across the competition and are looking to expand upon its blockbuster schedule next season.

“This year we saw the introduction of our Country Game initiative led by ‘Sheeds’ and I think you’ll see real momentum in year two for that,” Campbell said.

“I think our fans would love to see us play a little more Friday night football. I think commercially it’s important to play Friday night football.

“I think the hope and optimism we provide on field next year in getting these players to come back to the football club, the growth and the aspirations of the young guys this year has been one of the real positives.

“I think there is great hope for next year.”
