Essendon's rivalry with Hawthorn is among the strongest in the AFL and the two sides are set to renew hostilities in round one next season.

In a blockbuster match up at the MCG, the Bombers will also welcome back their returning stars and fans will march to the ground as one in the lead up to the first bounce.

The full fixture will be out on Thursday.

The announcement of the clash with the Hawks capped a busy week at Essendon.

James Stewart officially became a part of the Bombers comeback story when he joined the club this week.

The former GWS player spoke of his excitement at joining a big Melbourne club and is looking forward to forming a partnership in attack with Joe Daniher.

After 84 games with the Bombers, Michael Hibberd's move to the Demons was completed.  The Dons secured pick 29 in return.

It leaves Essendon with a strong hand entering next month's National Draft.

List and Recruiting Manager Adrian Dodoro reviewed the trade period and spoke about the number one draft pick.

So here's the state of play and a look ahead to the free agent pool for 2017.
