Martin Gleeson says the Bombers ball movement was one of the most pleasing aspects of the side’s JLT Community Series opener against Collingwood.

The Bombers intent to move the ball quickly was evident through their use of handball (164 compared to 161 kicks).

The side also took 70 marks (well down on their average of 102 in 2016) suggesting slow, short kicks may be on the way out.

“Some of our ball movement and some of our work from half back to half forward was really positive,” Gleeson told Sports Radio.

“Up forward we’ve got a lot of new faces up there but they gelled really well and I think it’s going to be a very dangerous forward line this year.”

The Dons generated 24 scoring shots from 37 forward 50 entries and took 12 marks inside 50.  The final score of 14.10.94 was bettered only twice during last year's home and away season.

“Sides are that good at defending these days, if you take your time trying to get the ball up the field you’re not going to be able to get it up there and give your forwards the best opportunity to score," Gleeson said.

“As soon as you get the footy you’ve got to try and go at the opposition pretty quickly.”

Gleeson picked up 15 possessions in defence.

The 22 year old has played 44 of the Bombers last 46 games to establish himself as a regular in the Essendon defensive unit – a role he hopes to continue this season.

“I think I’ll continue to play that half back role, try to beat my man and provide a bit of rebound,” Gleeson said.

“It’s going to be very tough for spots this year across the board, so fingers crossed I can cement my spot in the side and keep getting better and working on my game.”

Playing alongside Gleeson in defence against Collingwood was Andrew McGrath.

The number one draft pick collected nine possessions and was the only player among the 52 involved in the match to record 100% disposal efficiency.

“He’s had a great pre-season since he came in, he’s done everything right and he took another step last Thursday night,” Gleeson said.

“He was great to have down there in the backline.

“For a young guy, he’s got a lot of composure. He just went out there and beat his man and played his role for the team – that’s all you can ask for.”

The Bombers play Gold Coast this Sunday in the second of three JLT Community Series matches.
