Essendon Legend Kevin Sheedy has been recognised at the Victorian Sport Awards for his contribution to the state’s sporting landscape.

Sheedy was presented with the 'Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award’ in front of more than 500 people, including government and sporting dignitaries.

After a successful playing career, Sheedy commenced a long and distinguished coaching tenure with Essendon.

He led the Club to four premierships but always maintained a broad community focus.

“Kevin’s contribution extends well beyond the football field,” Essendon Chief Executive Xavier Campbell said.

“He has been, and continues to be, a pioneer of Australian Sport.

“He’s promoted a message of inclusion and diversity for nearly 50 years and countless people have benefitted from his encouragement.

“He transcends Essendon, and in some respects, probably transcends sport.

“Whether it’s a child at Auskick, an AFL listed player or the bloke watching the footy at the pub ‘Sheeds’ has a unique ability to connect with people and sport in this state is all the better for it.

“I see his passion for football but I see his equal passion for our country’s history, the farming industry and the sacrifice so many Australians have made protecting our shores.

“Kevin Sheedy is an icon of Australia.”

Past winners of Victoria's 'Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award’ include Bill Lawry, Cathy Freeman, Peter Brock, Jim Stynes, Ron Barassi and Lindsay Gaze.
