Essendon VFL has recorded its first win of the season in emphatic style beating Collingwood by 80-points at Windy Hill on Sunday.

The return of David Myers was one of many highlights for the Bombers.

He was returning to the field after a shoulder injury, back injury and then a damaged tendon in his finger left him sidelined for the better part of the last two seasons.

In his comeback match he picked up 35 disposals, laid seven tackles and kicked a goal.

“It was great to see Myers back for his first game in probably 18 months,” Coach Paul Corrigan said.

“For him to get through and have an influence on the game like he did was sensational.”

Ben Howlett, Kobe Mutch, Matt Dea and Tom Bellchambers were among the other players to impress Corrigan.

“Benny Howlett I thought (was good) up forward with his pressure all day as well as Kobe Mutch through the midfield and Clarke,” he said.

“Guys down back like Matty Dea and Hocking, they really set us up in defence.

“T-Bell gave us first use in and around the stoppages.”

Mutch had 27 disposals and nine marks, while Howlett finished with 25 disposals, seven tackles and one goal.

Bellchambers booted three goals in the third term. He finished with 15 disposals, two contested marks and two tackles.

James Peters also impressed in the forward half, finishing with three goals to his name.

“When you put it all together, we had contributors all over the ground,” Corrigan said.

“We had some focuses that we wanted to try and focus on for the whole game, not just in particular quarters.

“To be able to carry that out across the whole game, I thought that was a real credit to themselves and a real good team performance.

“It’s always good, you put in the hard work and the players deserve to get wins when they play like that.”

Myers set the tone for the day in the first quarter, booting a goal from outside 50, sending a roar across the field and through the grandstands.

It was from there tensions on the field became noticeable between the two clubs, with umpires breaking players up on multiple occasions.

Collingwood had more entries inside their forward 50 in the first quarter, but Essendon were able to make better use of its entries, hitting the scoreboard almost every time.

Essendon’s speed and accuracy across the ground was evident all day, moving the ball from end-to-end cleanly and precisely, then delivering the ball into the hands of the forwards.

By half time Essendon had jumped to a 42-point lead and didn’t show any signs of slowing down.

“If we can play footy like that for majority of the year then we put ourselves in a good position to hopefully win more games than lose,” Corrigan said.

Essendon will head back to training with the priority being players’ recovery heading into round three against Werribee on Saturday.

“With a six day break, the week will probably look a bit more recovery focused than trying to drill them on the track,” Corrigan said.

“Just making sure that they are ready to go again next Saturday.”
