It was the biggest victory of the season for the Bombers, so it’s not surprising there are a number of players pushing for a call-up after the Dons 89 point win over Coburg.

Here are some of the main contenders.

Tom Bellchambers

The loss of Shaun McKernan to injury saw a shift in team structure.  Sam Draper took on the ruck duties, giving Bellchambers the opportunity to move forward. After an impressive three goal performance the previous week, he dominated against Coburg kicking six goals.

Bellchambers was awarded the medal for best on field after another standout performance.  He ended the game with 24 disposals and six marks.

Kyle Langford

Langford was a major ball winner for the Dons, finishing with 34 disposals, seven marks, seven tackles and two goals.

After playing four games this season for the VFL side, he has averaged 6.5 marks and 9.5 tackles per game.

Ben Howlett

Howlett kicked three goals against Coburg on Saturday. He finished with 31 disposals, eight tackles, and four marks.

He’s has averaged nine tackles at the state league level this season, while also booting six goals.

The midfielder’s hard approach is well known and he is well placed to fill a role through the middle of the ground or in the forward half if he earns a call-up.

Jake Long

Long was named in the best against Coburg after an impressive performance with 26 disposals, four marks and three tackles.

The wiry wingman has shown he can take a strong grab this season and his defensive pressure remains one of his strong suits.

From the VFL:

Nash Holmes

A member of the Victorian Development Squad, Holmes’ combative approach is showing no signs of slowing down.  He’s averaging five tackles a game and has also proven an accurate shot on goal.

Alex Boyse

Boyse kicked three goals against Coburg, taking his tally this season up to 11 after five games.

On Saturday he finished with 13 disposals, six marks and 5 tackles.

He plays taller than his 190cm thanks to a natural spring and clean hands in the marking contest.
