Rules and the interpretation of those rules are often in the headlines during the footy season.

The introduction of the ‘hands in the back’ rule in 2007 took some adjusting and it was firmly in the spotlight when the Bombers beat Richmond in the Dreamtime at the ‘G clash that season.

Deep into the last quarter, scores were level when Richmond forward Matthew Richardson was penalised for ‘hands in the back’ on Essendon’s Mal Michael.

The Dons were able to go forward and record a memorable win.

James Hird picked up 21 possessions and was adjudged best on ground.

“His record in big games was so important,” teammate Scott Lucas said.

“He was a leader that led from the front.

“He was a great teammate to play with and it was those big moments he stepped up.”

The Dreamtime at the ‘G game is now in its 13th season and has become a central part of the AFL calendar.

“They are great games to play in … Kevin Sheedy is an innovator,” Lucas said.

“The Indigenous boys and their contribution to our Club and its history is just so important.

“For that game to be created by ‘Sheeds’ and for us to play in it each year is a huge a honour.

“It’s always a tight tussle, it doesn’t matter where both teams are on the ladder.”
