John Worsfold has shown he’s prepared to reward VFL form with Tom Bellchambers and Martin Gleeson making the most of their call-ups in recent weeks.

Here are some of the best performers from Essendon VFL’s win on the weekend.

Heath Hocking

Hocking was again dominant through the midfield finishing with 25 disposals and slotting two goals.

It was the fourth time Hocking has been named in the best from seven games in the VFL side.

He has also kicked 12 goals this season.

Kyle Langford

Langford was a major ball winner on Saturday against North Ballarat. He had 32 disposals, took six marks and booted two goals.

The 20 year old was used on the ball but also pushed forward where he caused some headaches for the opposition.

In his last four games he has averaged 26 disposals, six marks and five tackles.

Craig Bird

Bird finished with 30 disposals, two goals and five tackles. This is the third time Bird has been named among the best players.

He’s averaged 26 disposals and six tackles in his seven games at VFL level.

There is no doubting Bird’s contested ball winning ability and toughness around the contest, so if that’s an area the coaches want to strengthen Bird could be their man.

Matthew Leuenberger

Leuenberger returned to the VFL and dominated the ruck giving Essendon first opportunity with 38 hit outs. He finished with 21 disposals and one goal.

He has played six AFL games this year and averaged 34 hit outs.

Bellchambers was one of the stand outs in the AFL side, so Leuenberger may need to string a few games together to earn his spot back.

Josh Begley

Begley finished with 20 disposals and took eight marks.

He was instrumental in a number of plays that led to goals.

He’s in his first season, but physically Begley is ready to go.  He’s strong, combative and can provide a reliable leading option.

Begley has booted nine goals this season.

From VFL…

Nick O’Brien

The skipper was great though the midfield and in defence. He finished with 34 disposals and took six marks.

He has averaged 31 disposals, six marks and three tackles this season which has had him named in the Dons top players four times.

Alex Carr

Carr debuted on Saturday and was a handy inclusion kicking three goals.

He finished with 15 disposals.

Carr won the Morrish Medal as the TAC Cup’s best player in 2014.
