Four quarter performance

BTV: RD 17 | Bellchambers post-match We spoke to Tom Bellchambers after our Round 17 win over the Saints.

Tom Bellchambers says the Bombers ability to win all four quarters was the most pleasing aspect to emerge from the 61 point victory over St Kilda.

Essendon controlled the game from start to finish holding the Saints to just two goals in the first half.

A seven goal to two third term saw the Bombers skip out to a 55 point lead at the final change and despite the Saints booting the opening three goals of the last quarter, the Dons were able to kick the next four to win the quarter and round off an impressive display.

“I think the most pleasing part was the four quarter performance,” Bellchambers said.

“Last week we took a step forward after Brisbane and tonight was probably the first four quarter performance the team has been really consistent in.”

For all its dominance the Dons lead was only 15 points in the shadows of half time, but late goals to Josh Green and David Zaharakis gave the Bombers the buffer (28 points) they deserved at the major break.

“The message was really consistent throughout the game,” Bellchambers said.

“We did miss a couple of goals early and even late in the game they got a bit of a run on in the last quarter but the message was really consistent to keep playing the way we want to play.”

Bellchambers was a strong presence around the ground laying five tackles and also drifting forward to kick two goals.

“My game is based around the contest and I know if I’m doing that well then I’ll be in the game,” he said.

The Dons won the contested ball (135-120) and the tackle count (68-50) and made the most of the inside 50 (61-44) advantage.

The victory against the Saints sees the Bombers move to ninth on the ladder ahead of the match against North Melbourne next Saturday.
