The Bombers kicked the opening two goals of the third quarter to extend the margin to 20 points. In the opening five minutes the Dons had the first seven inside 50s and eight clearances.

But the Suns hit back with the next two goals to leave the Dons ten points in front at three quarter time.

Heading into the last quarter the Bombers were dominating the scoring shots (19-9), inside 50s (50-25), disposals (301-262), clearances (28-17), contested possession (109-83) and tackles (43-34). But the Suns remained in striking distance.

The Bombers kicked the important first goal of the last quarter through Cale Hooker. When Joe Daniher kicked his first of the night just a few minutes later the Dons were in front by 23 points.

By the time Darcy Parish kicked the Dons third of the term the margin was 32 points and the inside 50 count read 63-26 Essendon's way.  The Dons previous best inside 50 differential this season was 18.

The Dons controlled the key statistical areas for most of the match but it wasn't until the last quarter that they were able to kick away.
