Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce, Andrew McGrath, has extended his contract with the Bombers for a further two years.

The new deal will see the Rising Star Don the Sash until the end of season 2020.

McGrath said he is thrilled to commit to the Club and is excited about what the future holds.

“My intentions were always to stay at Essendon, and to now announce that officially is something I am proud of,” McGrath said.

"I want to help lead the young boys, and show them the ropes first and foremost. I always want to get better every year I play, and that will be no different this season, so hopefully I can build on my game and take it to the next level.

“I believe we are building something really special here. We have a lot of young talent and experience on our list, we are really driving to achieve the ultimate success."

The 19 year old played 21 games for Essendon in his first year at the Club.

In his impressive debut season McGrath won the NAB AFL Rising Star, AFLPA Best First Year Player, the Bombers' Best First Year Player and was named in the AFLPA's 22under22 squad.

Senior Coach, John Worsfold, said with a big pre-season McGrath could spend more time in the midfield.

"We're pleased Andrew has committed to the Club for the next two seasons, and will be a part of the elite culture we are building," Worsfold said.

"At only 19, the leadership Andrew displays both on and off the field is impressive, and shows he's fully invested in the Club’s vision"

“His performances in defence last season made him an integral part of our side, and with continued development over coming seasons he is on his way to becoming a handy inclusion to our midfield group.”

List and Recruiting Manager, Adrian Dodoro, said McGrath will be a valuable member of the team for years to come.

“It’s wonderful to see Andy re-sign today and continue to be a part of what we are building towards,” Dodoro said.

“Last season was an incredible year for Andy, he showed the ability to adapt to pressure in big games and shine."

“We have an exciting future ahead with so much talent amongst our younger players, Andy is obviously a part of that and I’m looking forward to watching them all grow together over the coming seasons.”
