Round two – Brisbane 12.12 (84) d by Essendon 17.9 (111)

Essendon showed plenty of grit to withstand a powerful challenge from the Lions and continue its perfect start to 2017 in veteran Brent Stanton’s 250^th game.

After the Bombers pushed away to a 42-point lead in the first half, Brisbane fought back to claim the lead at the start of the final term, but Essendon booted the last five goals of the game to 27-point win.

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti was pushed up the ground to provide the spark the Bombers needed and he had an immediate impact, while Orazio Fantasia continued his great start to the year with five goals.
