Round nine – Essendon 19.11 (125) d West Coast 8.16 (64)

In its first home game at Etihad Stadium for the year Essendon put West Coast to the sword with a 61-point thrashing that sent a warning throughout the competition.

The Bombers were ruthless in the first half, kicking 12 goals to three as they announced themselves as genuine finals contenders.

There were strong performances throughout the line-up. Joe Daniher dominated with five goals to continue his rise through the league’s key forward ranks, and Orazio Fantasia kicked another three majors.

A dominant display from Zach Merrett (37) helped the Bombers gain the ascendency in the midfield, while Michael Hurley was terrific with 26 disposals in defence.
