Cale Hooker was the hero for Essendon as it drew clear for 27-point victory over a gallant and inexperienced North Melbourne line-up.
After a tight contest throughout the day Hooker kicked four of his five goals in the last term to inspire the Bombers to the tough win.
Small forwards Orazio Fantasia (four goals) and Anthony McDonald Tipungwuti (three) put in impressive performances, while Dyson Heppell (26 disposals and two goals) was the best of the on-ballers.
The crucial win kept Essendon in touch of its first finals berth since 2014.
