Iconic Australian singer John Williamson AM will again perform the unofficial national anthem ‘Waltzing Matilda’ in a special pre-game ceremony at this year’s Powercor Country Festival match between Essendon and Geelong at the MCG on Saturday May 19.

Essendon and Geelong supporters are being encouraged to be in their seats by 4:20pm to take part in the ceremony and join in the singalong before the bounce.

Williamson, a lifelong Bombers supporter, said he was excited to be part of the 2018 country festival ceremony.

“This really is a True Blue event”, Williamson said

“I’ve played here before and the great atmosphere, comradery and friendships I have made have made me want to return again”

“This day celebrates everything I remember from my youth, people from all over coming together to share a laugh or beer together and celebrate the country.”

The pre-match ceremony will also pay tribute to the thousands of volunteers who continue to be the fabric of regional communities and will feature the unfurling of an oversize Australian flag held up by men and women from the Country Fire Authority.

Williamson will also perform at the festival in Yarra Park with other Australian artists including the Black Sorrows, Michelle Gardiner and Darren Coggan.
