Read this on the AFL Footy web site yesterday, wondering why none of the players wanted number one !!

no individual no.1 = no big head....all equal to create a team of no.1's...and a fan base that is "ONE"...i like it.. :0)
Stewart what an honour for you, big shoes to fill, I'm sure you'll do Welshy's number proud. Good luck for the season...... Ben Cobb, love your thinking.
I am delighted,to be able to see the number 12 run out again this year. What a proud moment, for Welsh and Crameri.Crameri, definately has earned the number 12 geurnsey.Diane
Ben Cobb - what a great idea. As a team united we stand. The fans are no.1 with the players occupying the other numbers in pursuit of premiership No. 17
Congratulations Stewart you got the number you wanted and I'm sure you will do it proud. Also congratulations to the new additions to our powerhouse club, now's your chance to imprint your names with your numbers into the history books! GO YOU BOMBERS 2012!!!
I'm a little surprised the big Bellchambers didn't get number 1...saving it for Caddy perhaps 8)
Mark McLachlan (posted 23/01/2012 8:23:50 AM) Mark, I don't think it was an issue of no one wanting the # 1 jumper, I think it was more that the coaching group didn't think want to just hand it over to any one at this time. Maybe next year Kav or one of the other big numbered younger players will be offered it if they have an outstaning break out year. As an example, Mark Harvey wore 38 for a few years before he was offered the #1 jumper. And congratulationswell Stewart. well deserved reward :-) Go Bombers
Rookie Long has big shoes yo fill with his name & number!! Awesome
Great to see Stewie with No. 12. Both tenacious, hard-at-it players so couldn't be anyone better! I like the idea of Ben C and Joel G above. Maybe all supporters who don't already have a number on a guernsey should get one with No. 1 - that's who we are, at Essendon, We Stand As One, and that is where we are GOING!! NUMBER ONE! Whooaah, now I'm getting excited and emotional and worked up and I think I ....... CAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNN, BOMBERS!!!
Maybe a weekly rotation of No. 1 would create huge interest if it was possible. But to many areas to adjust as in Gernsey size, program printing, ( although injuries etc are printed) so maybe possible. It maybe add another angle, & interest, & uh, pressure?
Leigh Geale, I would be surprised if we got Josh Caddy, GC will play hard ball and if he goes in the draft we would have no chance. Who would we trade?
Maybe the No.1 should be given to Essendon's Crichton Medallist from the previous year?
Yeah, 12 looks much better on such a good player as Cramma, than 45, and I like your passion all the way from Japan Kris.
Andrew, & Adrian, I like your suggestion re; Creighton Medalist from previous season is awarded No. 1; this year Hepps is it. No. 1 is a coveted Guernsey, & would be a fitting reward to wear for a year.Something for all of our team of champions to strive for?
Stewart Crameri 50+ goals this year bombers to make top 6
Maybe the No.1 should be given to Essendon's Crichton Medallist from the previous year?
- Adrian Reynolds (posted 23/01/2012 3:30:10 PM) Great idea mate i like your thinking!
Just adding my two cents about number 1. I don't like the idea of giving it to a b&f winner or any other rotation. It would hinder younger fans wanting their favourite players number. Not all of them buy a new guernsey every year. The club has had some great number 1 players and many more will come.
the best playe rI have everknown wore the number 24 at oakleigh. augers well for yung Browne.
Hmmm...Is #1 the MOST revered number at a club? #1 has had names like Belcher, Clarke, Harvey, Neagle, Fields and Barker but what about #5? Hird, Daniher, lambert, Baring. Or #10 Coleman, Noonan, O'Donnell, Foulds, Shelton. #3 Salmon, Reynolds, Beckton. Even #18 with Lloyd, Van Der Haar, Burgess, Stockdale and even briefly an aussie wicketkeeper (Gil Langley). #1 is special, but not the MOST special.
A number doesn't make a player, the player makes the number, every number on an Essendon guernsey would be an honor to wear, good luck guys
No 5 is already taken so No 1 must be held in reserve in case Hirdy has to pull on the boots to lead by example. Maybe player/coach isnt dead yet.
Hey Kevin, I meant the players could still keep their original numbers only wear the number 1 for the post season of their best and fairest, so their acheivements will be recognised on the field. That way kids can still purchase and wear their players original numbers with pride.
I am looking forward to the season startink and seeing just how well the team is this year ,win or loose BOMBERS are my team
Not sure with Long getting number 13.There will be to much expectation on him, from selected supporters. If he doesnt live up to the Long number,I can see a few carry on like they are with the number 5.Would think thats why Jobe didnt want to take 32,he wanted to make a 4 his own and no pressure on him to live up to the number 32,just my opinion.Diane
Save number 1 for the next big thing....Joe Daniher?
Don't know why the ole Oakleigh numbers have anything to do with the Bombers??!!?? And young Alex wore the Charger colours, nothing to do with the ole OFC ones...must be more self promo work from bd..
I do have to back the Club on this,if it decides to do something else with the number, off field promo this time, fine by me... I would have thought if it doesn't go to the skipper, how can ONE player be selected to do it justice.. this takes any possibility of any ego probs out of the equation...
But I tell you what,Adrian R's suggestion is a brilliant one, fresh and original..
Great innovative idea AR :-) Go You Mighty Bombers :-) :-) :-)
would have liked to see heath hocking take the number 1 jumper because,he plays like a number 1....cheers.
