A dream come true for Merrett

Everything fell into place quickly for Jackson Merrett last week.

On Sunday, Merrett was invited by Essendon to meet at the club's Windy Hill headquarters. It made the Bombers the last of 12 clubs to interview the teenager from Cobden, a small town in Victoria's south.

Four days later he became an Essendon player when the Bombers selected the 18-year-old with pick 31 in Thursday's 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

"That was the first time I'd spoken to them so there was a little bit of late interest, but it was definitely worth the trip down to Windy Hill for the interview," Merrett told essendonfc.com.au.

"But now I'm just looking forward to meeting everyone, enjoying it all and working hard.

"It will be good to learn from great people who are there to help me get the most out of myself."

At 187cm, Merrett is a nicely sized player who is an excellent kick, has poise and can see how the game's unfolding and where he needs to go to find the ball. In 2011, he finished second in the Falcons' best and fairest and represented Vic Country in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

He views himself as an outside midfielder – he weighs only 70kgs – but played some of his best football of 2011 in roles as a ball-winner rather than receiver. Adding to his height and mobility, he has speed. He ran 2.93 seconds for the 20 metre sprint at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, and thinks he can go even faster.

"I've got a bit of pace but I probably don’t use it enough out on the field so if I can try develop that into my game a bit more it can really take my footy to another level," Merrett said.

After the draft, Essendon's list manager Adrian Dodoro compared Merrett to a young Blake Caracella, someone who found space and was a reliable goalkicker. Merrett was only seven years old when Caracella played in Essendon's 2000 premiership team, but agrees that having an appetite for a goal is a big part of his game.

"I played a little bit up forward this year and kicked a few goals, so I definitely don't mind snagging a couple," said Merrett, who will be rooming with Bomber teammate Heath Hocking in the early stages of his time at the club.

Merrett's football bloodlines are strong.

His great uncle was Collingwood champion Thorold Merrett, who played in two premierships for the Magpies in the 1950s and was named on the wing in the club's team of the century.

Jackson's grandmother is cousins with twins Alastair and Stewart Lord, who played for Geelong in the 1960s, and his father Greg is a second cousin of Essendon dual premiership player Roger Merrett.

But, despite knowing he has a long way to go before reaching the heights of his football relatives, Merrett will be approaching his AFL opportunity with a focus on the basics.

He has already had hundreds of text messages of congratulations and friend requests on Facebook since being selected, but is more intent on gaining the respect of his teammates and coaches at Essendon than anything else.

"I'm going to go down there and build my body up and work as hard as I can until I get a game, whether that's soon or down the track," he said.

"When I get down there to meet the guys hopefully I'll be able to fit in with them and we can build a strong team in years to come."

Welcome Jackson. I admire your background and the effort you have endured to get drafted. You've got IT mate. Get stuck in.

Welcome Jackson, string together a few best on grounds for the BB's and we'll back you for a senior spot; we're slightly biased of course, but training here will set you up for life as a footballer and a human being.

187cm @ 70kg!? Hit the weights AND the buffet, mate! Welcome to the fold - always a place at Essendon for a Merrett.

I hope there is some merit in this story

Wow, can you imagine the mongrel of Roger, the flair of Thorold and the skill of the Lords in one package ? This kid has "champion" written all over him.

I have read a couple of times that we did not lose Seb Ross, but gained Jackson Merrett. I think that is pretty high praise. Also got a feel for the quality person he is reading the Herald Sun article about him. Welcome, Jackson.

we know you can play, just don't try to rush the start, things tend to happen to the ones who deserve it, just have faith in yourself, look at young Dyson Heppell, you wouldn't be there if you didn't deserve to be, keep telling yourself that, and grab the golden ring, proud of you.

Welcome to this great club Jackson.Essendon did well in the draft and things are looking bright. The lid is firmly on but there is a little bubble about to start.Everything is in place for a great year. You have the attention off all, lets get the season started. My mother was a Merrett from Nhill, looks like his bloodline just got better.Diane

Also, for anyone interested, the girls took on the boys again at our school, as we did last year. They played again for all women in AFL whether they be players, officials, supporters or mums. No photos this year due to the legal issues of posting kids photos on the net. Result, in a thriller, saw the Year 4/5 boys 4 1 25 beat the girls 3 3 21 with the last kick of the day. The boys wore the Essendon jumpers this time, and now 20 Essendon coloured jumpers are drying on my clothesline...that's thrilling.

impressive young man, level headed, prepared to work hard & fit in with the team. Congratulations and Welcome to you. With that attitude you will have all the support you need.

It is amazing how our wonderful game caters to all shapes and sizes..70kg. You Jackson must be special for our recruiting staff to have faith in one so tiny. Welcome to this mighty club of ours.

Love the family tree story..Very level headed young man, just a perfect fit for the Red & Blacks..another brick in the wall for our attempt to emulate the great Cats' foundation of continuing success, their first brick layed down nearly a decade ago.. Grow up BD.. Go Bombers :-)

building...BUILDING!!
- Troel Shields (posted 28/11/2011 2:34:42 PM)
Another Blake sounds excellent. He was a far too underrated player by other clubs - Jackson should be very honoured!
- Joyce Sellers (posted 28/11/2011 2:38:16 PM)
I am very glad that Essendon drafted you Jackson, because of your pace, good kicking and game reading ability, but also your good character. No doubt the experts at our club will help you bulk up fairly quickly, apparently Dean Robinson is good in that area. I am a big fan of pace, so I enjoyed reading that you think you can get even faster.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 28/11/2011 3:35:38 PM)
Don't forget this guy played Cricket. Can't wait to hear Kevin Bartlett's excuse "he's a fast Midfielder because of his Cricketing background"
- al Catraz (posted 28/11/2011 3:43:11 PM)
Still disappointed, we dellisted Matthew Little and brought back Anthony Long to train. Why get rid of Little explanation. Matthew Little's name isn't in the newspaper for Permission to train list. Hopefully Long doesn't play a game for us injuried riddled. Where's Matthew Little?
- al Catraz (posted 28/11/2011 3:44:49 PM)
Al. Matthew Little was never delisted - he was never actually on our list. Was playing for Bendigo. I have seen him around, but not sure if he us training with the team officially.
- Essendon Insider (posted 28/11/2011 4:20:13 PM)
E.I explain to catraz that little was never essendon listed played one game for hawthorn and is a vfl player. Get your facts right al you can't delist little if he was never on the list.!!!1
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 28/11/2011 4:34:26 PM)
Seems a good selection. He looks a bit like Thorold too. If he can play half as well he will be a star.
- Jeanette Jennings (posted 28/11/2011 5:23:53 PM)
Any chance marglani can have a crack again noticed his training with the saints? What went wrong with muscles seemed he was gonna get a gig before crameri.
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 28/11/2011 5:35:09 PM)
C'mon Al, hasn't Bendigo got a forum you can get on to? I think that being the great club that we are, we give every opportunity to our listed players to get right - why we drafted them. Darcy, Tyson, Jay, Gumby. Anthony Long, if he puts his hand up to stay here and feels he can get right, I would hope we give him the chance. The indigenous lads tend to miss home (Manson), if Longy wants one more crack, I hope we can give it to him.
- Brad Scarr (posted 28/11/2011 5:43:19 PM)
Hard to keep everybody happy EI,just that for me,after supporting the club since the mid '60's (well before the joker davies even knew who he wanted to be) I have always backed the Coaches and Staff of the day who decide such things as the playing list... they know best, and Hirdy & Co know much more than all of us :-) All the masses do,is speculate and shadow guestimate.. everybody's entitlement if sticking by the rules.. Go Bombers :-) :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 28/11/2011 5:55:49 PM)
With a short interval between #30 and #31 in the draft, it provided time to consider the options. Based on how last year's draft went 4 names came to mind: Markworth, Grigg, Merrett and Newnes. Congratulations Jackson Merrett, think you will fit really well into Essendon's midfield. Looking forward to your run and carry game - with pace and precision.
- Martin Gol (posted 28/11/2011 7:19:55 PM)
According to the permission to train list on the AFL site today, both Little and Long, as of 2.31pm today, are both on the list, so I don't think anyone owes any explanations.
- Wesley Hull (posted 28/11/2011 7:52:05 PM)
Looking very good, just hope they give Longy & Little a miss, as Hirdy said we have plenty of forwards & don't waste a selection with more injury clouds, would like to see young mid John McKenzie, all Aust. from Tassie & Key defender Boseley looks ready to play, a ruck & speedy defenders which we lack
- Mark McLachlan (posted 28/11/2011 8:21:37 PM)
Oh right, Sory Essendon Insider! didn't realise that. I just rate him highly for he is a talent, and can't wait to show Hawthorn why they shoudn't have dellisted him 4 years ago!
- Anon Ymos (posted 28/11/2011 8:45:50 PM)
go jacko
- Joshua Hickey (posted 28/11/2011 8:53:01 PM)
Al Catraz, Matthew little is a very good player at VFL level mate. I like him but sorry mate he isn't AFL material. He is a little slow compared to some of our new young lads. Not in the EFC mould Im afraid. I would love to see him have a crack but I think there are better players around than him at EFC at the moment! Im pretty sure he is James Hirds cousin too? So if he was any good Hirdy would have him there?
- Harry Calaghan (posted 28/11/2011 9:21:33 PM)
You have some bloody good bloodlines mate, so thats a great start, now you have time to work on that, build the body up, and the skills , and go for it, make your own story, with the red & blacks !
- Bill Arthur (posted 29/11/2011 4:14:51 AM)
Give it your best Jackson. Thats all we ask. Good luck. Mikey.

good luck son!
- peter campbell (posted 29/11/2011 10:01:10 AM)
One would have thought he would have been picked before 31. He looks a 10 game player in his first year, another Zaharakis.
- Alan Davidson (posted 29/11/2011 11:28:27 AM)
Al & EI, i read this morning Little & Long are training with us. Maybe an oportunity in the Rookie or Pre-season draft for both!

- Shayne Formica (posted 29/11/2011 12:33:57 PM)
What great footy bloodlines!!!! He'll have to be a Champion!!! Good luck Jackson - am looking forward to seeing you as part of the Bomber team.

Little & Long are on AFL website as allowed to train with Essendon
- Mark Gibbons (posted 29/11/2011 1:53:40 PM)
Welcome Jackson I hope you receive all the success you deserve. Alec Epis has described EFC as a big city club with a country club environment, ie no big heads I'm sure you'll fit right in!

Well done team a good selection

Welcome, I look forward to your first game!
- Glenda Freeman (posted 29/11/2011 4:27:18 PM)
Al, not sure where you're getting your info, but Little has been on the Permission to Train list for weeks, and Anthony Long was added to the list a couple of days ago. For one, I'm extremely happy that Anthony Long is apparently back in the frame, if he can get his boy right, he looks like a shoe-in to find his way back on to the senior list. I hope so!
- Graham Flynn (posted 29/11/2011 5:50:07 PM)
great family tree,if he was a racehorse he would cost $200.000.Good luck jackson I was fortunate enough to see all your relations play, great players & all had class.
