Bombers grow mo's for a good cause

Essendon players Kyle Hardingham, Dyson Heppell, Michael Hurley, Ricky Dyson, David Myers, Henry Slattery, Kyle Reimers and Michael Hibberd are each putting their clean-shaven faces in jeopardy by participating in the annual ‘Movember’ campaign.

In honour of former Bombers star Kevin Walsh’s famous moustache, both Essendon staff and players have formed a Movember group named the ‘Kevin Walshmen’ to support men’s health research.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

Walsh said earlier he was preparing to grow, evolve, raise and cultivate a glorious moustache all in the name of charity.

“I was approached by the club to become a part of the Movember team because of course I am one of those guys who got stuck in a time warp and still sport the most magnificent ‘tache," Walsh said.

“The sad thing is, I still imagine that I am irresistible to women as a result.

"My memories of playing for the Bombers include big hair and lots of fun. Oh, and I seem to remember a couple of premierships," he said.

Walsh said despite the fun of getting involved with the campaign, he was keen on supporting the worthy cause to bring about greater awareness for the Movember initiatve.

"This is a very worthy cause and I felt that I wanted to make a contribution on some way. The Movember idea is a bit of fun but it does help to focus attention on the issue of men’s physical and mental health which is great," Walsh said.

"My advice to the current players growing their moustaches at the moment is remember to use plenty of fertiliser. Not too fancy, just a simple nutrient supplement available from your nearest garden supplies or hardware store."
