Essendon Football Club today welcomed the release of the 2012 Toyota AFL Premiership Season fixture.
Essendon chief executive officer Ian Robson said the club was pleased with the fixture overall and looking forward to the start of the club’s 2012 campaign.
“The club is content with the fixture as it provides some great opportunities from a football, commercial and supporter perspective next season,” Robson said.
"In saying that, we are naturally disappointed that we only have one home game in the first five rounds of the season and that we don’t play a home game against a Melbourne based club until Round 8.
"But overall, the draw does provide great continuity for our football department and supporters with fifteen matches scheduled on a Saturday including eight Saturday night games in a row during the middle part of the year,” he said.
The Bombers will play a total of 17 games in Melbourne next season with ten matches scheduled at Etihad Stadium and seven at the MCG.
“We play MCG blockbusters against traditional rivals Carlton, Collingwood, and Richmond twice during the season, as well as a home game against Melbourne in Round 10,” Robson said.
“Next year, ANZAC Day falls on a Wednesday providing a significant challenge for our fitness staff and players to be able to recover from a four day break after the Carlton match in Round 4.”
Essendon travels interstate on five occasions with two trips to Adelaide and one to Perth, Gold Coast and West Sydney.
“Similar to last season, five interstate trips is a good result for the club,” Robson said.
“It is very exciting to be playing Greater Western Sydney in Round 9 at Skoda Stadium in what will be a historic night
“Not only will it be the first official AFL match in Blacktown, but it will be the first time Kevin Sheedy and James Hird face off as opposition coaches,” he said.
In a positive reflection by the broadcasters on the development of the club recently, Essendon has been granted seventeen games on free-to-air and five on pay TV next season.
“Overall, we are pleased with the fixture and now looking forward to our Round 1 clash against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.”

happy with the draw, looking at going to Metricon Stadium, as my interstate trip next year.

The club maybe happy with the draw, but as a dad with 2 pre-teen kids who love their footy the draw seriosuly sucks! How does one justify paying nearly $800 when realistically there are only about 4 games we can attend for the whole year? It is long past time that the club started pushing for a draw that is more suitable for their younger members. Afterall they are the long-term future for the club. Graeme
Not happy , we have played Brisbane in Brisbane very rarely, i think from memory, 4 times since 2000, and this year was our first win in the same period, we are being starved for our team, all Brisbanites suffer, but turn out in droves, oh well at least we have the Suns.
It looks ok - but again we play brisbane, GC, + GCS only once each.. Also as we have anzac day every year why do we have to play carlton in rd 4 every season. Its like groundhog day
About time we got a good draw, Geelong, Hawthorn, WCE once and GWS, GCS and Port away is good. Could be 9 from 11 at the bye if we have a good run with injuries, Pies and Blues will be only real tests.
Not too bad, but as an older rural fan Saturday night games are impossible to attend, don't get home until 1.30am!
It looks(for once), that the AFL has given us a LONG over due decent draw... I'm pretty happy with this, and I'm very excited to see The Bomber Machine destroy teams this year! With another good pre season behind the boys and hopefully a few good draft picks, along with NO injuries we'll show all the other teams, that the days of not fearing Essendon are OVER!
great draw, only 2 sunday games, 1 away & 1 home. only down side is only 1 friday night home game.
I think it's been hinted at in recent emails, that we will have to pay an additional cost to receive a member scarf this year. Is this correct EI ? It would be nice if someone could let us know.....
Very Happy with the draw this time,it will be on round one with one of my best mates Ace who is a Kanga's Supporter.
Only one trip west, and against Freo. Can't complain about that. Anzac Day will be tough - we'll be coming off a Carlton clash while the Pies will just have had a cakewalk with the Power. Overall though, a Bomber-friendly draw.
Apparently (On afl.com.au) we have a home game in round 21, against Adelaide, at the GABBA ? um, what ?
At least we aren't the Doggies, 7 interstate games for them.
We play Carlton in round 4 on a Saturday then Collingwood on Anzac day on a Wednesday? Only three full days to recover i think that's a bit rough. We should have played Carlton on the Friday night. Otherwise this a great fixture.
Best draw we have had for years, should make the top 4 with this draw, as i don't expect we will get an easier draw than this for a long time - The AFL must have stuffed up !!
Best draw in ages. But surely the AFL isn't serious about our playing a game on 21/4 and then 25/4???? Maybe we should concede the ANZAC day and give a bunch of kids a bit of big game experience?
Did I read 4-day break between playing Carltoon (on Sat) and then playing Collingwup on ANZAC Day (Wed)?? That's ridiculous for ANY team against any opposition. Four days break in the modern game of AFL? Putting the physical recovery issues aside, in terms of mental build-up and game intensity there is no greater for an Essendon team now than Carlton and Collingwot. The players might as well just sleep in their uniforms on a bus in the MGC car park to conserve energy. Then we have a 3-day break to play Bris on Sat... Can't move ANZAC Day, but why not Carltoon on a Friday and Bris on the Sunday?? I usually don't moan but make an exception here.
Whoops, my apologies AFL. Didn't read closely enough. There is a big break between Anzac Day and the Bris game - thought it sounds too insane.
I like it: finally the AFL are realising the amazing popularity of this mighty club right across Australia.
17 games in Melbourne, 10 Etihad we are being looked after by the AFL in a financial way, just wish we played more @ MCG than Etihad as we get lost on big grounds, no use getting into the 8 by beating only bottom sides & playing @ Etihad then getting smashed like this year, much better to play the top sides twice and proving we deserve to be there and not just making up the numbers,
best draw we've got in years. Only 2 of the top 8 twice and getting the power, tiges and roos twice should equal 6 wins. Finals on the agenda!
Kris, it's unfortunate that the draw ends up like that and I can see the day when we play 2 games a week, look & the pommy Succer they play regularly 2 -3 times a week @ Ragby quite often twice a week, professional sport bowing to sponsorship $dollars$ but I would love to watch the Bombers play everyday....dreaming...
I see the 'Goons of Parkville' already play 7 Friday night games so we get stuck with them on Saturday before Anzac Day... Anyway, better draw than last year, but over the next few years - until they become almost unbeatable - clubs will fantasize about two games each against GC and GWS, might chuck in Port, too. Almost guaranteed 8 premiership points. International Rules tonight! If we close our eyes and listen to the names it will almost be like footy... is... (sob)... still here...
ANZAC day gives us just 4 days to prepare, ok what happens happens. We have to play the 5th top team from last year just before... & Collingwood get 2nd bottom... that'd be right!!!
Like the look of Round 1 to 11. Better start than last year. Tough run home from Round 17-23. Need to have finals secured by then. Port is not a given like maybe Suns and GWS...it took a super quarter to catch them this year and they always play well against us. Fancy Geelong getting GWS at the Cattery...carnage!!!
first two games against our phobia teams. hopefully we play better against them in 2012 than we have in the past 10 years.
Kris, It's gonna be nice when we're a force again! That Port game last year was too close, I had about 6 meltdowns during that match... We seem to still have some problems with teams we should "realistically" smash... It's coming though, we have a pretty good line up if we can keep everyone one the park...
About time we got a fair go and there is
no reason for us not to get off to a flying
start and remember EFC,more wins=more
membership=more money!
We should be in the top 4 at the bye but then finish 6th or 7th with a tough second half to the year. Around 13 wins would be par on current expectations. Why so many Sat night games? Are you trying to break up my relationship with my non-footy-loving girlfriend???
When is Adelaide going to start playing us more often at home. We alway seem to go there. Adelaide have only played us twice at home in 7 years.
El, why does Essendon always play its home matches against Melbourne at the MCG? Melbourne hates Docklands and draw poor crowds so I don't understand the logic
I agress with Graeme Wensor this is a slap in the face for families 9 games on a saturday is a joke when you have young kids. Guess i wont be going to the footy that often next year.
Re Port last year - I know what you meant. It was the one and only game I saw live, in the gracious company of Noel and Dave Husk, and having met some more of the cream of this site! While we should never have HAD to fight back, I think being able to do that and hold stead(ier), like against Geelong, was a feature of last year. That's mind as much as body. But we do need to pound teams, a la 2000, when we have the chance.
Great draw, the 5 interstate trips are the best ones I`ve seen in a long time. 17 games on free to air, atleast we can still watch the boys if we can`t get to the game. Go Bombers.
how can ppl say this is not a bad draw ,, look at rnd4 v carlton, 4DAYS LATER WE PLAY THE PIES how can this be ??
so we play the blues and pies in 10 days all up ,
i can hear the AFL rubbing their hands together already to count the $$$$$$$, worst draw of all time , wake up ppl..
I hope it happens eventually Mark, it's the only way to make the league truly fair, play everyone twice, once at home and once away. AFL games every night of the week. Bigger lists, bigger cap and way bigger $$$'s for all concerned. A 34 game season spread out over 25/6/7 weeks, 3 pre-season practice matches and no NAB Cup!!! Easy!
A FOUR DAY BREAK AFTER CARLTON? IS THE AFL SERIOUS? The team should boycott the Carlton game....at least put us up against a weak time just like collingwood who is playing a weak team.
As for the new draw, irrelevant, we have to be above that and just focus on smashing whomever is put up against us. Where we play should make no difference. And I'm with you Glenda, saturday night games are a killer for rural fans, but, if we were playing our home games at a newly developed stadium in Tullamarine, I'd be home by midnight. EFC is going nowhere, the AFL have heaps of cash, which they'll get back, build us a home ground please Mr. Dimitriou!
Would of been nice for the members to have had more home games in the first month and wow, we don't have to play Sydney in Sydeny for the first time in like a decade! Not a bad draw overall.
Saw Essendon games in Brisbane 2001, 2002, and 2003..........3 losses, havent been back since.....sorry to our Essendon fans in Brisbane.
Good draw for once but hate playin carlton n collingwood after each other and to play em 4 days apart is stupid..plus afl is way more physical than soccer will ever be..so players will be stuffed...and after losin the 5 games in a row this yr to north, melb, richmond, freo and hawthorn no games a given so wont get to excited bout it til we see what they put out startin with north..
Looks like i'll be able to do some travelling next season.AWESOME!!Happy with the draw.Get to see 20 GAMES!!Wonderfull!.Don't care when or where we play as long as i can watch live as much as possible.Love that we play AWFULLTHORN at ES.We can give THEM heaps this time the maggots! No WC in Perth-Heaven!No home Perth umpiring decisions to melt down over.Love it! :);)
-WC Perth UMP decisions i mean.We can boo THEIR captain if he gets knocked down.Counting down the days!
Best draw for Essendon in years! 14 near consecutive Saturday games broken only by ANZAC Day and the bye. Consequently, playing Carlton and Collingwood inside four days will be challenging. Perhaps they can be the Mexicans and the Dons to be the Conquistador!
Only 155 sleeps to go!!! I won't get to see the Bombers in Brisbane (what a change!) but looking forward to watching my first game at Etihad. Hopefully they play better against Port than they did this year.
if you think thats a good draw for supportes robson..............you got rocks in your head
Saturday night games are only slightly better than twilight games ........they stink to high heaven. be rest assured they are 8 games i wont be attending along with 2 family members and three friends.
and suprise suprise round 1 an away game........we have by about 3 games the worst record of round 1 home games in the competition over the past 22 years. about time our club flexed a bit of muscle over those morons at the afl
only 4 day break from playing the blues then pies, how can this be ?? what does the afl think
we are all robots.. can't remember a match ever been played with a 4 day break, can anyone ????
Essendon always plays well in the next round after playing Collingwood, (really alert) so I'm stoked that the Dons are playing them in the final round. Bring on 1st week of the finals.
Very happy with the fixture.Looks like I should be able to go to all games. Anzac falls on a wednesday,so we pretty much have to play 2 games in a week if we want to keep this game.Happy with playing collingwood last round, after their trip from perth. Diane
Absolutely right, Diane. As powerful as the AFL seem to be, they have no say about the timing of Anzac Day, and our hold on this fixture is coming under threat more and more each year. Even Malthouse has changed his tune about our right to retain it (wonder why ?) so we just have to grin and bear it. With a full team on the park we should be competitive in both these games anyway.
If we want to keep Anzac day exclusive then we have to accept the short break.. simple
I'm with you Diane, the four day break fiasco is harsh, but the Mighty EFC gets to represent on Anzac Day, a game 16 other teams envy us for.
I want to see if Andrew Demitrio, I don't know how to spell it, can play two games in four days. That's ridiculous!
If where good enough we'll win enough games to play finals the draw doesnt account for much.To say a draw is hard is speculation except for the travel factor.Your predicting form and injury 6/8 months in advance.
The only thing that seriously concerns me is the short break between the Carlton and Collingwood game. Other than that, if we're ever to be a top four, or grand final contender, we have to just get on with it and accept draws like this, and win the games.
1/ Can't whine like the Skippy Kid on the ole Fast Forward.. "orrrrr Skip..!" We have to beat all comers to be successful,no matter "Where Or When" (you singin' Bill?!) or against "whom"...
We have been developing the list for 4 years now,new pre season training approaching,a HARSH one,the players have been told to expect... the 3/4 day break between Rds 4 & 5,will see a few changes for freshening up the side.. eg Winders/Courtney & Prissy will not play both etc etc.. Bomber Fans, players stronger/fitter/wiser makes the prospects in 2012 something to excite us all,in how it should develop...
2/ New Home Base ovals ready to use the following year, the Bomber Reserves returning back home as well, marg & bob deciding who they want to be,our new recruits with a season under their belt,Wally back resettled in his role...Lloydie perhaps in a part time role… Is there a better Club to barrack for eh ?!! Does the future look bright ?!! You betcha.. Go You Mighty Red & Blacks.. :-) :-)
have a serious hatred for the 7:40 saturday night timeslot. way too late. the only thing worse is sunday 4:40.
Davor, Sunday 4.40 can be put to good use. Last time, Diane arranged a (this) forum meet @ the Whitten Bar. Great opportunity to actually meet some sane footy supporters! Diane, perhaps Aug12 maybe another opportunity? Cheers
Yeah Noel.and,as usual I'm in tune with all your comments. As for "Where or When",in my collection I have Bert Kaempfert,Diana Krall,Dick Haymes,Dinah Washington,Frank Sinatra,Johnny Mathis,Rod Stewart,Ray Conniff,The Four Lads and Steve Lawrence & Edie Gorme. Can you hear the whipper snappers saying"Who is this old bloke and what's he on" :-)
I think the 4 day break between Carlscum and Eddiewood will be a great opportunity for us to show the footy world that we will no longer be intimidated, we are physically and mentally stronger and that we should be feared. Forget the draw men, just focus on the roo-skin.
sat night in brisy we always get their game on tv. or suns. and we've got how many of those? never mind. good draw for a change. :)
qld sat night we only get to see brisy or GC. and bombers have how many of those? im happy with the draw for the boys, just not happy with it for me :(
Sounds good Martin. Why have the AFL changed to times. Friday was 7.40,sat night 7.10. Probably for the stations benefit. Unfortunately the afl cannot please everyone. Families find it hard for sat night games, but also many kids play on a sunday. Damned if they do and damned if they dont. Diane
Looks good to me. Only one match at Subiaco to pencil in as a loss?!
Guess what, the Pies only have a 4 day break b4 the Anzac day game also, sounds very fair to me..
The '4 day break fiasco'? Seriously, they are professional athletes and will be managed accordingly! I'd much rather cop a 4 day break in round 5 than round 22! Dont complain people, there are 16 other clubs who would jump at the chance to play on Anzac day!!
No excuses for anything less than a 21-1 season given the draw. I'll concede Round 13 in Perth.
Great article by Tim Lane in The Age on crowd 'roars'. One of his examples: "Heard from the members' wing, Windy Hill emitted a sound of almost electrical hostility." Yeeeeeahhhh! One of my favourite Essendon roars, and it will live forever in my inner ear, was on the train after the 1985 Flag when it was announced, "Next stop - Essendon". Would love to hear that again, and again and again!
Ah Bill, you love your music.. only way to be,and less stressful for the likes of us in the forums, while some others have been poppin' their poofer valves... been playing a bit of Freddy Gardner/Guy Lombardo/Dick Todd/Der Bingle/Big Ben Banjo Band/Carmen Cavallaro stuff too as well as your favs... been wavin' and smilin' at other drivers (as well as concentrating on good driving, and stopping those lovely speed cameras from flashin’) and at pedestrians who stop 77 cars (on av) at a time... life has been good recently...And Kris,as Mary Hopkin sang back in the late '60's... "Those Were The Days...my friend".. Cheers All :-) :-)
The last time we played on Saty 21 Apr and then again on Wednesday 25 April (we won both games) was in our 1984 premiership year. Perhaps an omen? .... the other teams WE don't fear.
Big call Geoff, hope it turns out that way mate, but after struggling to beat the bottom sides this year it would take a recruiting miracle to improve our list that quick, but never say never..
WE get a good season fixture, but the nab cup is so do on us. We have West Coast and Fremantle away in our first match. And the only televised match of the Nab Cup is the final! And if the AFL had any sense, it would play Anzac day in round 4 and put the Pies on Monday night in round 5, and us on Tuesday Night.
Noel, what I should have said is that those singers I mentioned are the ones I have singing "Where or When", you aint heard nuthin yet.
EYE FOR DETAIL: Pies delist Daniel Farmer #46. Dons keep the promising Alex Browne #48. Actually, as a footballer Browne looks like a cross between two Heath's - Hocking and Shaw.
NATIONAL DRAFT 2011: Three weeks to go! Who will Essendon select with #19 & #31? It's impossible to pick with any precision as all list manager's have a different perspective. It was a master-stroke upgrading #41 to #31. I'm assuming Stewart Crameri will be upgraded with #59.
Love to watch those moments (and seasons sometimes) when well-coached players fade from functioning as individual particles according to personal egotisms and the laws of classical mechanics; and begin to respond as a single waveform, with action-at-a distance, intuitive quantum fluctuations and harmonics that encompass the energy of supporters in many more than 4 dimensions. Selections and training should aim to construct that unifying resonance.
What is the go with all of the Sat games and only 3 Friday night games, with the first in round 17
EI....great draw but any chance of UPDATING the homepage!! New Sponsers etc
why do we always play the blues and then the pies a week later? this year would have to be the worst by far with only four days rest, that's just crazy. Massive test and if we don't knock off the blues it's going to be hard to rock up 4 days later and beat the pies. predicting the pies will continue their winning streak against us thanks to the draw. havent looked at the draw but I bet the pies play someone like GC or GWS the week before
Thomas F, Kevin Sheedy said much the same of our great 2000 team (though in a different register), "They have moved past the boundary of playing alongside each other and into the dimension of playing for each other in order to fulfil individual and club ambitions". As for the 'unifying resonance', reckon the opening bars of 'See The Bombers Fly Up' do pretty well for supporters, too!
Well said Martin. The one thing that stood out with Browneys couple of games was his spirit. Big heart and a bit of go. The talent should be in the breeding. Rossy was the same. Get a few more with that potential please Dodoro.
My tip for pick 19 in the draft-Mitch Grigg from SA.Hard inside midfielder,big engine.Pick 31-Seb Ross,midfielder.
I agree with Graeme Wensor. The draw is not friendly to families & country supporters. Beig an MCC member there are few day game to attend so have to select what other other day games are worth going to. Seems that with the high price paid for the TV rights give the TV stations a big say in who plays when & where." Go Bombers"
Mark E. brave call! Three weeks ago I might have agreed with you. Now not so sure. Think Seb Ross has risen in draft calculations and could be picked marginally either side of #19. Currently, I have Daniel Markworth at #19 and Shane Nelson at #31. Would be interesting to read other poster's comments.
Martin, pick us some new tattslotto numbers will ya mate,my numbers seem to be getting further away.. he he.. :-)
Noel, just work out who your six favourite footballers are (all Essendon of course) and use their jumper numbers.
He he he.. have too many favourites though Martin,I'm hopeless..a hopeless romantic :-) :-)
We always lose to the Kangas when we should win. Their backline rough us up. STAND UP AND TOUGHEN UP.
