With the introduction of the GWS Giants – who are guaranteed 11 of the first 14 picks at this year’s National Draft – essendonfc.com.au investigates the calibre of playing talent previously on offer with the club's upcoming picks at the 2011 AFL National Draft.
Today, we take a look at the best of pick 19.
Barry Hall (Western Bulldogs)
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers 1995

Big, bad Baz was first recruited by St Kilda from the Murray Bushrangers in 1995 and immediately impressed as a promising forward. He was then picked up by the Sydney Swans in 2002 and became the club’s leading goal kicker every year until 2009 - however quickly earned the reputation of being a controversial player. Hall finished his career with the Western Bulldogs and retired at the end of the 2011 season after a colourful career.
Brad Green (Melbourne)
Recruited from: Tassie Mariners 1999

30-year-old Green made his debut in 2000 after being recruited at pick 19 from the Tassie Mariners in 1999. Green has played 241 games for the spirited Demons and continues to make an impact on the field. The experienced left-footer was named captain of the Australian International Rules team and won his first club best and fairest in 2011.
David Mundy (Fremantle)
Recruited from: Seymour/Murray 2004

Promising Mundy made his debut for Fremantle in 2005 and immediately made an impact with his ruck/rover partnership with Aaron Sandilands. Mundy was the Dockers’ best player in 2010 and commenced the 2011 season by averaging 26 disposals per game. The 142 game player continues to be a star recruit for Fremantle.
Courtenay Dempsey (Essendon)
Recruited from: Morningside 2005
Recruited from: Morningside 2005
Dempsey was drafted in 2005 at pick 19 at the National Draft from Morningside, QLD. To date, he has played 54 games for the Bombers after a breakout season in 2009. In 2010, he was solid in defence, playing 20 games and averaging 18 disposals a match. Dempsey’s 2011 season was limited to 4 games after sustaining a season-ending knee injury against Carlton in round 4.

After watching video of the phantom draft no doubt kavangh is a talent but one must think of how a couple of torn hammies is going to sustain with the demands of afl. If anyone has a chance read the hume leader has a piece on tom sheridan breaks my heart guys loves the red and black and dreams essendon calls his name, he might be ripping up those posters. MY call sheridan/ross sheridan looks like a top player/natural as ross lots of potential. No disrespect to Elliot also a bomber just to much ?

I am confident that we will get a very good player with pick 19, and one who doesn't have a suspect body, or suspect limbs, Hirdy, Dodo, and our medical advisors are too smart for that.
The more we read into Kavanagh, the more it sounds like he is our man. I hope Dodoro is happy with him. All players will have a period of injuries at a stage of their careers, lets hope he is over his. We will have new facilities when Elliot is pushing for ones consistently, and will be managed properly. He is a Bomber isn't he? - bring on Elliot and Seb Ross!
Courtenay Dempsey is the "missing player" of 2011 who I'm most looking forward to seeing back on the field this year. He was building terrific creative momentum when he so sadly went down & seemed to be working way harder. Lets hope luck is with him (and the team) this year!
Tomorrow will pay dividends for the trade
of Jenkins(hopefully ross,kavanagh,Sheridan)
I just we traded a player or two and had an
extra pick or so,whether you Finnish 1st or
last you need top up with about 6 kids every
year.
Must recruit skillful midfielders and a ruck
or tall forward.
Use the first pick on kavanagh (if he is still available, and having read a number of reviews he deserves to go much, much higher than 19) and the second pick on Sheridan (again, as long as he is still available).
We have done well around this pick: 1986 Keiran Sporn (22), 1988 Michael Long (23), 1992 Scott Cummings (20),1997 Dean Solomon (20), 2005 Courtney Dempsey (19), 2007 Tayte Pears (23), 2008 David Zaharakis (23). Some decent names in that lot.
I am hoping our supporters support the decisions of those who know more than we do. Kavanagh seems to have pleased the people in the know. Still can see this: Pick Kavanagh..does hammy...Sheridan stars elsewhere...Dodoro gets called everything under sun. OR...Pick Sheridan...Kavanagh wins Rising star and 2015 Brownlow with no hammy problems...Dodoro gets called everything under sun (ie:why didn't we pick Kavanagh???) Poor guy can't win, but does a super job. In Dodoro I trust.
This one's specifically for Wes & Brad. NatDraft11: 1.Patton 2.Coniglio 3.Tyson 4.Hoskin-Elliot 5.Longer 6.Wingard 7.Tomlinson 8.Greene 9.Buntine 10.Sumner 11.NHaynes 12.Kersten 13.Markworth 14.Frost 15.Ellis 16.Adams 17.DSmith 18.Docherty 19.Kavanagh 20.Talia 21.Mitchell 22.CSmith 23.Lockyer 24.Murdoch 25.Elton 26.Crozier 27.Forster 28.McKenzie 29.Bootsma 30.Sheridan 31.Grigg 32.Boseley 33.Sheehan 34.Ross...Pure guessing game of course, one intuitive mind-set versus 18 recruiting teams who have differring approaches to drafting. Cheers
Not too sure if he nominated or not but if he did could we please draft Kyal Horsley from Subiaco. He's only 24 and a ready made midfielder. He won their B&F this year and I think he was second in the Sandover Medal. I used to coach him at cricket as a junior. He is pretty good at everything, played state hockey as young fella and opened the bowling for our A grade side as a 17 year old and can basically run all day. He was also playing senior footy in Kalgoorlie as a 17/18 year old. I think he was captain of Subi last year as well. Goodluck which ever we go, Carn The Bombers!!!
Thanks, Martin. Appreciate it. #19 seems universal, but what about #31. Will it be Grigg (the talented slider), Sheridan (the passionate supporter) or Ross (the genetic connection)? Can't wait for tonight.
Well said Wesley. Can't win either way. We just have to trust our selection guys. They are the people with the facts and figures
Whoever we get, they will have one thing going for them. THEY WILL BE BOMBERS !!!
None of the above players are champions so dont try and fool us 19 is a good pick
Yes, Kavanagh has had his injuries but so to did Dyson Heppell and Joel Selwood before being drafted. I hope we get him
Good work Martin. It will be interesting to see how close you come with that list. This might be your CV for a recruiting job. Well done.
Good one Martin, you will be very close, Dodoro won't be the one making the final call & the difference between Heppell & Kavanagh is that Kavanagh HAD 2 major "hammies" '10 & '11, Heppell only had RUMORS of groin injuries
In Golly we trust! Can't wait to see who we get. Best thing is, in 2012, Browney, Rossy, Davo and Ariel will be better and right to go!
