Essendon has welcomed five new players to its list today, following this morning's 2011 AFL Pre-Season and Rookie Draft.
With the club's first selection, Essendon drafted talented teenager Lauchlan Dalgleish from the North Ballarat Rebels who promises to be an exciting midfielder.
The Bombers have also welcomed 22-year-old small forward Corey Dell'Olio from South Fremantle, after being taken at selection 29.
With the club’s third selection, Essendon took mature age defender Mark Baguley from Frankston.
Essendon used both the fourth and fifth selections to take young medium defender Hal Hunter, recruited from the Calder Cannons as well as mature age midfielder Brendan Lee from East Perth.
Former senior listed player Anthony Long is set to return to the club, after being pick up as a rookie with Essendon’s final selection this morning.

Good job getting Long back! Did we pick up a ruck man though?
glad to see the Long walk ended up back at windy hill...
what!! what the point of getting matthew little to train with us and not select him? go Essendon reserves!
goo to see a couple of mature aged players in there like hird said, if they good enough they should come into contention for selection straight up. looking forward to 2012!
GO DONS!!
i see we have gone back to the future and recruited Don Mckenzie type ruckmen
It seems that we have thrown a wide net, from WA to VFL to local. I think that suggests some homework and planning so I will look forward to their development and contribution to our club. Dalgleish looks to be a great get, and great to have Long back. The club certainly has wraps on Lee. Well Done.
I don't think we got a ruck. Myles Bolger's injuries must have counted against him and Hawthorn took expereinced players McCauley and Pattison. Ruckmen will be very high priority next year unless someone like Hooker shows that they can play the second ruck role.
who did we get with pick 11? thought we didn't have apre season pick? what's going on?? at least richmond picked up maric, others picked up recycled players what's wrong with us??
Mr Catraz...nothing wrong with "us" at all. Closely....closely...read the profiles for each and you will see they are all qualiy picks. Ruck speculation seems to have either been a smokescreen or a wait for Daniher next year, as well a a quality draft field. We have clearly drafted with a 10 year view rather than a 3 or 4 year.
Crikey, just saw that ruckman Tom Campbell from Bendigo went early too! That means five of Bendigo's players have now been drafted- Kerridge, Dickson, Biggs, Dunnell, and Campbell. What an amazing year for the Bombers.
Dissapointing we didnt pick up Shane Valaneti from port melbourne. Given our success with mature age rookies i think he was worth a punt
If bendigo sign a Ruck we don't need another... 3 rucks won't play in one game again.. Gibson Turner would have been nice..
Congratulations also to Sam Dunell for being rookies by St Kilda. Another Bomber name lives on, albeit not with us. Good luck. I bet Frank's proud.
Like Hunter & Dalgleish, but why after the coach said we had enough forwards does he get another 3, we have no trouble kicking a score but have trouble getting the ball forward and impossible to stop the opposition forwards..as proven this year, not a fan of recruiting rookies over 20, would prefer to go youth, can't understand the Long selection at all
Looks like we have covered most bases, except the ruck, however i had a feeling that article was a smoke screen, we have to trust the powers that be, they must have info on who is who in the draft, but i'm glad we still have young Longy, just needs a bit of management with his injury problem, and he can develop into a very polished player, just like uncle Michael.
Welcome to all of you new guys, and welcome back Longy. I have been doing some reading about you, and you all give me reason to think that you could be good players in the AFL. It is obvious that there was no ruckman available in this draft who looked like he had the ability to reach a high standard in the AFL. We should have more chance next year of getting a good ruckman, when there will be no new team having heaps of early picks, and we will get Joe Daniher.
6 bendigo footbball club players taken over two drafts. not happy! what the point of using talent form the country as our vfl team, when we're not man enough to recruit them? i mean look at hawthorn, they use their box hill team as the vfl and they reward talent from box hill to the hawathorn grade.
at last a Mark Going to Play for us
my 1st name and welcome boys to Essendon Fc Anthony Long welcome back
Happy with 1st pick and longy(please get
him and gumby right) ,don't know about
the rest.
No ruckman is a major shock, should have
looked at a tall forward as well but time
will tell.
MMM! i dont understand the logic in asking Aron Day to train with the club and not select him either! anyway Go Dons 2012
Happy with 33.3333% of the selections but still welcome all 6 guys and hope you have a successful stint at Essendon.
Welcome to the Bombers boys, your future looks bright. After reading some of these comments, I'm glad we leave it up to the professionals to do the drafting! GO YOU BOMBERS!! 2012 HERE WE COME!!!
In time many will appreciate the recruitment strategies. Our plan of attack for this year is to particpate in finals again and see how far we can get with this list and understand where our gaps can be bridged with future recruits. What we have is a list that is still in development and/or improvement phase. I think we are finding we're able to attract players to Bendigo as well not just Essendon.
well done corey now it is time to work harder look forward to seeing you as abomber
for those asking where is the ruckman , have you people heard oh HILLE, RYDER, BELLCHAMBERS????
Al Catraz, just because someone trains with us doesn`t mean we have to select him. Obviously, he didn`t show enough. Gee, I`d hate to see a team made up of all your recruiting expertise.
We've got another couple from the West, that makes 10 on the List I reckon! Obviously a great place to go recruiting!
rowan, we have heard of hille, ryder & bellchambers. we also heard & read that hirdy wanted to draft another ruckman.
congrats to all the new boys! i think Dods & hirdy have recruited a great mix of runners!i see in the next 1 to 3 years we will have a great mix of mid fielders and with winda & demps back we have all the speed we need Go Bombers
It is interesting. I am good friends with Mark Baguleys mother. I wish him all the best. Along with all the other recruits.
Welcome rookies! Have confidence you CAN make it BIG TIME! You have a boot in the door, now stick it on a footy as often as possible! A few names in that set of selections that no-one anticipated. We should back the draft team to get it right. We have some good results in the last few years. I thought T. Tuck might go but if 16 clubs overlook him then guess that says enough. I don't see the point is saying 'ruck' then not selecting, so probably there was no-one good enough to select when our turn came. Or maybe our Jimmy was just being cute.
Good call Rowan Gerecke! i was thinking EXACTLY the same thing! You don't need too many ruckman on your list.Joe Daniher will be at the club next yr.THERE is our future ruckman people.Good spread of players Adrian Dodoro and Merv Keane this yr.WELL DONE!
Al,why would we want Maric. In the 4 years at Melbourne,he played 21 games. He could not string consecutive games together. If Melbourne delisted him and they didnt have a great side, doesnt that tell you something.Yes,Richmond picked him up,so what.Yes others picked up recycled players, again,so what.Did Geelong pick up any recycled players,no.They very rarely do.We are Essendon,we do what we want, not what other clubs do.Number 11 pick was our rookie pick by the way.Dalgleish over Maric, anyday.Diane
I'm not at all surprised that no AFL club wanted Fevola or Lovett.
NOW, I see! Fletch is going to spend the last four or five years of his career in the ruck! What goes around, comes around!
Hey EI, any news on david meli? do we still hold him as an international rookie or do we have to draft him?
